Chesspolitik (4p): Rules & Recruitment

Chesspolitik
A Perfectly Balanced Variant for Four Players

Image

Introduction
So I put together this new variant called Chesspolitik, which is a mashup of Chess and Diplomacy. I came up with two designs, and we'll be playing the four-player version of it.

The game will likely start some time in the second half of January.

Rules
Except as specified below, ordinary Diplomacy rules apply.

Basics
Game Starting Year: 1601
Total Supply Centers: 32 (the darker spaces)
Total SCs required to Solo: 17

Each player starts with five SCs and four units. They will play the first year short a unit.

Units
There are two types of units: Kings (K) and Knights (N).
Each moves and supports according to the adjacency they would have in chess.

Kings treat all spaces that are immediately adjacent orthogonally or diagonally as adjacent for all movement and support purposes.

Knights "jump" from point to point in a move that makes an "L" shape (see the Wikipedia article on Knights for examples). This means that the only spaces a knight may move to or support to are the endpoints of those jumps.
For instance, a hypothetical Knight currently at space A1 can:
  • Hold
  • Move to B3
  • Move to C2
  • Support some other unit's move to B3
  • Support some other unit's move to C2
  • Support another unit to hold in B3
  • Support another unit to hold in C2

Builds
Players may build in any vacant SC that they own in the two rows/columns closest to their side of the board.
For example, The Ming Dynasty can build in any of these spaces, provided that they control them: G7, G5, G3, G1, H8, H6, H4, or H2.
Likewise, the Mughal Empire can build in A1, C1, E1, G1, B2, D2, F2, or H2, provided that they own the SC in question.

Please be clear whether you want a King (K) or Knight (N) unit. If you just say "Build K H2" I will have to assume it's a King. If you're worried about getting it wrong, you can alternately refer to Knights as Horses (H) instead.

Retreats
There are no retreats. All dislodged units are taken off the board.

Convoys
There are no convoys.

Scheduling & House Rules
The scheduling and house rules will be similar to those provided for the Tournament Through Time:
Example Scheduling and House Rules

In short, orders will be due every Monday and Thursday at 7:00 PM New York Time (EST or EDT) in a three-season rotation: Spring, Autumn, & Winter. Two game-years will normally take three weeks.

Communication will be handled via Discord. Orders can be submitted either via a private channel in Discord or via forum PM; pick one and be consistent, please.

Draws must include all survivors and are voted on secretly using standing draw votes. This is also similar to the tournament rules, though there will be no hard game-year limit.

In the event of a solo, there will be one winner and three losers. In the event of a draw, I will rank all surviving and eliminated players by total SC count or year of elimination. The size of the draw will be irrelevant. As this isn't an a scored game in actuality, there are no points attached to that rank; it's listed instead for posterity (and to discourage draw-whittling).

Missed Winter Orders/Adjustments
Similar to normal Diplomacy, if you miss submitting Build orders for a Winter turn, you will forfeit the relevant build(s) that turn. If you don’t submit the required number of Destroy orders, I will destroy units using the following priorities.

  1. Destroy units that are not occupying an SC.
  2. Destroy units that are the furthest from your Home Supply Centers (those you started the game with).
  3. Destroy Knights before Kings.
  4. If units are still equal in priorities 1, 2, & 3, destroy units in alphanumeric order, using their spaces' letter-number coordinates.
Assignments
Country selection will be done by luck-of-the-draw.

Recruitment
There have been a couple players already expressing interest in playing this that I'll give preference to. As there are only four slots, I will also give preference to players with a history of reliability on forum-based, Discord-based, or site-based games.

    Players
  1. sinnybee
  2. willie23
  3. StarkAdder
  4. GhostEcho
    Reserves & Observers
  • nanooktheeskimo
  • DipideeDawg
  • Don Juan of Austria
  • Groo

Please sign me up! :)

I wish this was gunboat, since negotiations for chess just seems wrong, but oh well, looking forward to this.

Running a Gunboat game as a human GM isn’t impossible, but it does make recruitment and such a bit tricky.

Well, we're currently at 2/4; that's halfway there!

Who else would like to try out this abstract Dip variant?
