In-Game Chat

Postby bratsffl » 05 Dec 2018, 20:13

Not sure if this has been discussed. Look like latest references were more towards the forum or main site screen chat.

But was just thinking the ability to interactively chat with those in your game would be very nice, as opposed to 50 back and forth messages in 30 minutes? Obviously several chat apps exist but those would be outside the site and thus violate external communications. This would have to be unavailable for gunboat games. Anonymous games would have to reflect only the country; which I guess would also be the desire even for non anonymous games. I would be willing to say that chat details do not get kept, if you want something saved, copy into a message. This could also possibly reduce the server space needed due to reducing the number of messages? Further questions that would need clarification, can a country be in multiple chats at the same time? If involved in a chat, it may be useful information even for other countries to be able to identify that a chat is going on, so would be nice to be able to hide that fact, too.

I'm all for ways to make communications more effective. But you can't allow anything to be deleted. There is too much potential for abuse and/or cheating. All messages need to be preserved.

While I am all for anything that facilitates communication, I do wonder if there would be an unintended consequence... Such a chat feature would be far more effective for folks in the same time zone than it would for folks on different continents. Would such a feature make it more likely that folks with similar schedules ally? It's already much easier to have strong communication with somebody in your own time zone than somebody eight hours removed. A chat feature could easily exacerbate such an discrepancy and inadvertently add add more bias to how alliances sort themselves out. This is just food for thought. I'm not convinced that it would be an issue.

I actually think it would facilitate time zone difference alliances more. The few precious hours time zone differences have would not be wasted on waiting for replies.

This is something we continue to consider. The major issues have always been the same, and have already been mentioned. The first is that it does seem to give an unfair advantage to people in similar timezones, and the second is that most online chat facilities don't like the chat to be logged so that others can read it.

I think the first is pretty obvious; if most players are in close timezones and one is in an unfavourable one, the interaction between that one and the others will always be less. If the person they want to talk to happenns not to be available for the couple of hours or so overlap, then they are more or less stuffed, while ones in similar timezones have many opportunities to try to connect.

The second is perhaps not as strong an argument as it was, but it sill needs to be considered. If the chat tool allows all conversations to be logged and viewed by a third party (for example a Mod) then that is fine to a point, but a number of tools don't like to do this without the approval of the participants. But even if you do have a transcript, I can assure you reading a transcript is very much harder work than a set of in-game messages as today. Chat transcripts tend to have a lot more...er...chat than in-game messages, and it can take pages to get to anything that is game related. They game related stuff is often deeply buried. Admittedly, in terms of cheater hunting the messages are not as critical as they were because our new cheater hunting AI provides a whole set of other indicators of cheating, but there are other reasons Mods need to see comms, for example if someone is making cyberbullying claims or there is prohibited content like porn etc.

We will continue to keep it in mind, but at the moment we are still maintaing things as they are.
