Manual Orders issues

Postby super_dipsy » 13 Jul 2018, 10:35

I don't know of any at the moment, but this thread is for anyone who finds any. I am hoping some people will try it so we can verify it is working / fix the problems :)

(If you have used it and it appears to be working, that is also very helpful input!)

Not sure if its an issue or not, but the drop down only show adjacent territories and not all territories on the map.
There are pros and cons to this, and a case when coding meets product design. :o

Super dipsy weighed it here. :)

One final point about the manual orders interface, which is going to be controversial. The initial approach only shows you dropdowns for possible moves. As we all know, it is possible in the point and click interface to issue orders that are illegal. You will still be able to do that of course, but the maual one will only show legal order options. Perhaps a word of explanation is worthwhile on this. Take the example of an army in paris. On the point and clickinterface, you COULD order that unit to move to Warsaw. In practice of course, it is totally obvious visually you can't do that. However some might argue that knowing for example that you cannot move from Liverpool to London is a skill; plenty of newbies fall into that trap. Whatever the arguments, the fact is that the code cannot distinguish between 'a mistake that should obviously not be allowed' and 'a mistake that you will gradually learn from as you play more'. So if we are not simply going to show the 'possible' moves for Munich, we would have to offer a dropdown with 40+ territories, even silly ones like Warsaw. That is likely to irritate people no end. So at least for the moment, we are going with only showing legal orders for the manual interface. But don't worry, if you WANT to 'accidentally' enter an illegal or incorrect order ;) you can still use the point and click interface. If anyone questions you, just say you never bother with the manual one

Thanks Don J. Yes it is a tricky one, and I know some people don't like it. On the other hand, others feel that if a newbie screws up his first game by making illegal moves then it is more likely they will just walk away. And it does make it easier in terms of selecting the order you want on a phone. Having 40 territories to choose from would be a little heavy handed.

This is absolutely not cast in stone though. If the majority feel it should be the same as the point and click interface and offer all options, then we can do that. But it needs a debate and probably a poll.
