Managing drop outs and replacements

Postby ColonelApricot » 16 May 2018, 01:57

Drop outs and replacements seem to be a major issue for the PDL. Evidently the deterrents are not sufficient to keep drop outs at a low level resulting in a significant burden of administering the process of replacements.

Much of the underlying cause is human nature as manifested online and it's impossible to change that. The answer lies in accepting this unfortunate reality and creating a model that minimises the impact on those tasked with the administration.

A model for handling replacements seems to be gradually emerging but is not yet fully stable. Once a stable system is established then it should be automated along the following lines:

1. Recruitment of new players - new players to be made aware of the league and encouraged to make themselves available.
2. Provide an account attribute that defines a player's availability (at least a yes/no indicator, might need more enrichment).
3. Enable an automated process of populating new league games.
4. Enable an automated process of replacing drop outs (including replacement by promotion and relegation).

Items 2, 3 and 4 are obviously going to depend on technical development based on a well-defined system model.

The community will settle down. Those who are serious, and want to see it through will stick with it. Even if is ends up being two divisions, that's ok. People who join after that should start in the third div, and then get to work their way up if they are reliable enough (and good enough).
