WITA: Adjusting the colors of Peru & Chile

Per the beta feedback, it seems that my current color selections for Peru & Chile are still too difficult to distinguish, particularly when zoomed out on small screens.

This is not an official vote, but I would appreciate some feedback on the possible color options listed below.

Version 0: Currently in Beta
This is the status quo. It's probably not sticking around.

Version 1: Hot Pink Peru
Here, I shift Peru to a hot pink color which I hope would still be distinguishable from the Spaniards' pink.

Version 2: Slight Tweak Peru
This version is a much less drastic change; it incorporates a slight shift in hue for Peru to pull it further away from Chile's color.

Version 3: Blue-grey Chile
This version leaves Peru as-is and changes Chile instead. Chile, instead of red, would take on a darker grey color with a hint of blue. This is intended to resemble the modern uniforms of the Chilean army.

Version 4: Rusty Chile

All those options still have a close similarity when I'm looking at them, granted I'm 5% red/green color deficient.

Here's an orange color for Chile that looks to have substantial contrast against both the New Grenada and the Peru colors:

While that exact color, once plugged into the map, ends up looking too similar to New Granada, a similar (but darker) shade provides a sort of rust-brown that's quite different:



Would it make sense to make this an option to vote on as well?

I personally don't care for it, but it's something I could work with.

That rust color is still closer than the difference if Chile were pink. When I'm checking contrast between colors I usually use the tool available here:

I'd voted for Blue grey, though I'm worried that the sea units wouldn't show up super well... If Rust color was an option, I'd Definitely vote for it though.

If I continue increasing the darkness, that shade doesn't hit 1.7+ until #6B3D00

1.5:1 contrast is usually my minimum for having 2 colors up next to each other unless I'm purposefully blending them. Granted, having 10 colors with that contrast is difficult without looking silly, but I think that the current colors already meet that requirement. Peru is the only issue, so perhaps this darker red would work.

I voted for the hot pink in the poll - the blue-gray is the best color but way too close to Argentina's purple - but of all the options the rust is far and away the best.

I'm curious what components that calculator looks at to determine contrast. I've been analyzing the HSL components of the colors and mapping them to a polar graph to visualize color distance between all of them, rather than just a pair at a time.

Update:
Okay, I see the issue here. That calculation is only looking at differences in luminance, which is very important for reading text-on-background. By doing so, it's comparing colors on the basis of what they might look like in grayscale.

That's useful, but it's not the whole story, especially when what I'm dealing with here is more comparable either to:

1. Two background colors, side-by-side (country coloring)
2. Two foreground colors, side-by-side, shown upon a common background (unit coloring, esp. when on water or neutral territories)

Because of that, I need to use Hue and Saturation as well, not just luminance / lightness.
