PD Versailles Tournament Has Started! Game Information

Postby sinnybee » 19 Mar 2014, 19:13

Our first game has started!
It is the only Game B starting before the Game A games.
As with all Phase 1 games, "This is an ANONYMOUS PLAYERS game. Players MUST NOT REVEAL THEIR PARTICIPATION in the game."
A big thank you to super_dipsy for a solution in managing Anonymous Players games.

Tournament scoring
(an alteration of the Mille System, supplemented by end-game supply center count)
Solo = 110 points
2-way draw = (100 pts); 50 pts each
3-way draw = (90 pts); 30 pts each
4-way draw = (80 pts); 20 pts each
5-way draw = (70 pts); 14 pts each
6-way draw = (60 pts); 10 pts each
7-way draw = (49 pts); 7 pts each
+
End-game supply center count = 43 pts; 1 pt each

This small print not updated since 15 May, but you get the idea.
Thumpington, charliepayne007, White_Wolf, Thorntonian Empire, ColesD, Major B, and Pb10gon are guaranteed to make it into Phase 2/Semifinals; congratulations to them!
Ecallaw, clindseysmith, pelagius, FDRjr, GhostEcho, Ricgraz, and rshivy are out, and unless almost all of the remaining games end in a solo by players already in the top 17, Wagner, Maucat, and BruceSurfcoast will also not make it into Phase 2/Semifinals (finishing both games without a solo or draw in both games likely means a score below the top 28); thank you so much for playing in the tournament!

A big thank you to super_dipsy for a solution in managing Anonymous Players games.

I read the updated rules when first posted, and no Anonymous anything was then noticed. With the overlay of Anonymous variation onto the Versailles variant, I withdraw from the tournament.

We had 9 votes for Normal Phase 1 games, 11 votes for Anonymous Countries Phase 1 games, and 19 votes for Anonymous Players Phase 1 games. Even though I'd rather go with one of the first two options, to allow me an easier time keeping an eye on what's going on, and to allow spectators the same, the vote will be honored, with all Phase 1 games being Anonymous Players.
...
(This post was last edited on 15 March, other than updating a vote from "18" to "19" on 19 March.)

Okay, I'll take you off the list.
Too bad... I was bending over backwards for you in trying to do almost everything you asked for.
For example, I was about to plan the best way for getting a good space between Game A and Game B for players like you who wanted such, though the median vote was on the low side of 5 days.
Oh well.

Thank you for your efforts, and I hope you will succeed in giving all players sufficient time to handle their simultaneous negotiation periods. As with my other "requests," the goal was not what *I* wanted, but what, in my humble opinion, gave the best structure for the best play for all.

As I mentioned in answer to your 'survey' PM, wherein the proposed use of Anonymous play in the Final was mentioned (tbd by yourself, btw, not as one of the 5 options for which we might vote), that variation was never mentioned in the OP as a possibility, and I would not have signed up if it or any other variation on normal play was to be used. Indeed, the OP stated that no variations on the Versailles variant would be used. I never received any subsequent PM or saw any Forum post, discussion or poll asking about introducing it in Phase 1 or elsewhere.

Good luck to all.

In short, my OP always said that all tournament games would be PureDip. I allowed all official sign-ups to vote on various setting options. A strong percentage of the vote was for Anonymous Players Phase 1 games, a setting that is allowed under PureDip games.
You did already say "I withdraw from tournament if Anonymous Countries or Anonymous Players is used at any stage" back on 7 March along with your PMed votes, but with all the players involved, I forgot to let you know that unfortunately the vote didn't meet your requirement of having all Regular (not anonymous) games for the tournament.

socratease wrote:Indeed, the OP stated that no variations on the Versailles variant would be used.

No, it never did. I have saved everything that I have ever removed from my OP, including:
I might be able to be persuaded differently, but for the sake of simplicity, keeping all the tournament games PureDip would save time, as I spent a good amount of time sending out and processing surveys that asked players about a dozen questions about the specifics that they wanted for The Ancient Mediterranean Tournament.

Oh... I guess you're talking about something that's still there (at the top):
•The Versailles Tournament will consist of only PureDip games, since in my opinion, the awesome major/minor powers concept of Versailles is already unique enough without adding other variants to the game.

Sorry if that's confusing.

Again, anonymous games are allowed under PureDip.
Sorry that complete game specifics weren't able to be provided until I looked through the votes (graciously recorded for the most part by mr bump).

Sinny you can't please all the people all the time :)

I'm interested to know what the objection Socratease has to anonymous games

Hi xavier,

I've nothing per se against any of the map or game play variants, nor variations of variants. The game was designed for play against known / knowable opponents, but Anonymous play is a fine / fun game play variant for whoever wants it. Gunboat and PP only as well. These each fundamentally change the nature of negotiations and therefore how the game is played, but again that's fine for whoever likes it.

For the 1st ever tournament for the Versailles map variant, however, I wanted to compete for "best in Versailles" not "best in an Anonymous variant of Versailles." I'd have withdrawn if any of the tournament was gunboat, build anywhere, whatever.

As an aside, I'm not the first to be surprised that "PureDip" is defined to include not only variant maps but variations on some game negotiation fundamentals but not others, yet not include games with full negotiations against knowable opponents in build-anywhere or Age of Empire mechanics variations. *shrug* probably won't be the last, either.

Good luck to you in the tournament.

And the game is off and running. I presume. I can't see the action as the first season hasn't adjudicated yet. I suspect there have been a flurry of messages and bluffs and threats and postures and intrigue and gaffs and so on.
Trust breeds trust. Mistrust breeds mistrust.
