To Lie or To Tell The Truth

Do you agree with this statement as it relates to diplomacy?

If you don't blatently lie to people you become easy to read, and if you do, you get a bad rep.

Its interesting, but I tend to repay those who treat me well with similar treatment, and those that don't with what they 'dish out' so to speak. Flat out lies though, with no shading of the truth? Not too often. The game is fluid enough as it is and things change quick enough that changing your mind is not that hard to understand.

I disagree, totally. If you lie all the time, or too obvious and to often, nobody will believe you anymore. An occasional, functional lie will have way more effect if you told the truth so far. Therefore, I will tell the truth most of the time, so I can wrap me lies if I really have to make them.

It's like stabbing: if you do it all the time, it won't work. People will expect you to stab, and make sure the are protected from it (read: you). Lying and stabbing is what gives you a bad rep. Telling the truth and being trustworthy is not 8-).
~ In an informal or social sense, diplomacy is the employment of tact to gain strategic advantage or to find mutually acceptable solutions to a common challenge in a non-confrontational, or polite manner.

You can play poker without bluffing, but you will not be very successful. The same goes for lying in Diplomacy. But as it has been pointed out already: Don't pick up a tendancy that will make you predictable. Predictablility kills you faster than anything else in Diplomacy.

I try to tell the truth as much as I can...sometimes it becomes necessary to twist the words though...and sometimes to outright lie...

And as I've said before to defend myself, often WHEN I say something I do mean it...it's only later I decide to do something else, so it's not technically lying, since I thought I was telling the truth at the time. Most people don't accept that one though. :P

I lie to Radishes too, but only because I don't like Roots much.
