On Holiday

Postby Uncle Monty » 15 Nov 2008, 12:20

Actually we may find we are faced with a problem with rounds 3 & 4 as a result of them taking 2 - 3 months to run. That means the tournament is likely to take over 6 months to run in total. As such it is likely that people will be on holiday (or vacation as some of you would say) during parts of the tournament. I myself was planning on going away for a week in February with my family. Now, I may be able to get an internet connection somewhere but I can't guarantee it. In previous games I've got a friend in my office to fill my moves for a week. In a tournament game I probably wouldn't want to do that.
I'm sure I'm not alone in this problem over a six month period.

Firstly, what do people plan on doing themselves? Is it even allowed to get someone to do your moves in the tournament? I'll have to check the rules.
And secondly do you think that in future we should run all 4 "first round heats" concurrently to limit this problem?

As I suspected, getting your friend to takeover is expressly prohibited. From the rules:
"If you have a personal, career or other compelling reason to leave the game, please inform the Tournament Director, who will assign a player from the waiting list to finish your game. You will receive 0 points under the first scoring system (see Tournament Scoring) but will receive the full points in the second scoring systems. You will be allowed to continue the tournament. The player who takes over for you and is assigned by the Tournament Director will receive the full points under both systems and our eternal gratitude.

Takeovers by friends, relatives and your girlfriend will result in a punishment decided by the Tournament Board."

So it looks like we may need stand-ins for holidays. Which is interesting.

Some advice perhaps UM? You're looking at this quite the wrong way around.
You should be looking for someone to stand in for you on your family holiday.
Priorities, man!

So you can get an enemy to stand in for you and escape punishment completely...

Diplomacy is to break someone's leg and then to say; "Lean on me."

Tell her "Honey, see, it's like a VIRTUAL holiday - but cheaper and easier on the greenhouse gasses. We start here in France, and then choose where we'd like to go. Tuscany? Sure. Clyde? No so nice this time of year. A cruise in the North Atlantic?"
