Is it possible to use playdiplomacy to run a F2F game?

Postby IcomeInPeaceMaybe » 25 Sep 2020, 11:54

Hello Playdip,

I have looked around the forum but not found an answer to the following question / idea:

We want to play a F2F game and use the orders solver in real time to process orders, and use the platform to track the status of the game electronically. Is this allowed by site rules if we play a "friends" game in some way? Entering orders into the solver is a no-brainer, but I want to keep track of the turn-to-turn board status in a "friends" game, so we don't have to re-enter the board status each time into the orders solver and just run the session all through a "friends" game. Sorry if this question is already answered somewhere on the site, or if I have not explained myself well enough. all help appreciated.

I don't see any problems. Just set up a friends game and whenever you're all ready to process your turn you all finalize. You can even message each other via the game's normal messaging so that communications are confidential (i.e. who's is talking to whom).

There are no restrictions about operating on the same server when in friends games in so far as I am aware.

A group of us played one using zoom to chat. That worked pretty well.

I hope people don't have problems with me advertising other sites, but the sandbox mode on Backstabbr worked quite nicely as a digital F2F Diplomacy board. We used paper ballots for moves, and then inputted them to the site together in the living room (sandbox mode allows you to control all the powers). We shared the computer screen with the board on our television, and I think you could make the sandbox public so everyone could view the board from their phones, which is good for people who can't memorize the positions of all the pieces.

We did this mainly because we wanted to use the classic paper orders and have people mostly negotiate F2F, but if you want to be more digital than that then I think Playdip friends games work perfectly.

Thank you everyone for your responses, I was hoping the "friends mode" would be the solution and sounds like it is. Thanks!

In 2011 a year after I joined PlayDip, I invited my friends to play Diplomacy and I told them you won't have to clean up the boardand there would never be an argument over the rules during the game.

They sneered at me on the phone and asked "how are you going to do that?"

I went to the host's house for our face to face game with six laptops. The host had his own. When everyone arrived, we gathered at the table in front of the laptops and I helped everyone create their accounts and get logged in. Then I created the game and invited them all to join. We played that game... and we've been playing like that ever since. And there has YET to be an argument over rules.

I am now investing in tablet based computers. It's easier to carry them to a conference in a quiet room away from the table than it is a laptop. Plus I can fit them all in one of my motorcyle's saddle bag vs six laptops.

Yep friends game is the easiest way to go! Just teach everyone how to finalize so you can move the turns along on your own time and you should be good to go.

Let us know how it went/goes!
