Russians get a shade of Russian Green, similar to their military uniforms.

I considered coloring Japan jade or green, like the Avalon Hill edition does, but there isn't a good historical basis. Their flag is red-and-white, so I'm currently thinking either pink (since Turkey is already red) or plum/purple (a color which has other significance to Japanese culture).

Looking at those colours I find Peru and Chile very similar especially for neighbours so it is likely to cause confusion from the start. Changing Peru to Darkred (#8B0000) might improve things or you could give up with gtradition and make one of them a neutral grey, purple or something (see below about purple)

I also think it is more Logical to give light blue to Argentina as it is the only country with pale blue in its flag and American blue is darker, Pale turquoise (#AFEEEE) would be good colour for Argentina and is light enough to have USA something like Royal Blue (#4169E1) which would still be easily identifiable from Argentina and your Navy(?) Great Britain.

Argentina’s flag in 1840 was purple.

USA gets light blue in part because the pants of their military uniforms were sky-blue in that era.

Peru and Chile: I’m still working on those. Both have dominant red colors in their flags, though Chile’s tends toward orange-red. I’ll see what a darker Perú looks like.

Oddly enough, neighboring powers tend to be easier to distinguish even when their shades are close because side-by-side the difference is more noticeable.

I really love the shade in that link; is it just me or does the color you posted look more gray than that?

Mine is a bit washed out, but I can adjust that back. I think it currently is the shade I used for my 1900 map, where I desaturated the color to further distinguish it from Italy’s green. I’ll fix it back for this.

Oh good grief, that is the right color already. It wasn't the washed out version; it was equal to the color I linked. It's just an optical illusion; on the site it looks different because of the difference in backgrounds.

What about the change seen below? I think it's still recognizable as Russian Green, particularly when you compare it to pictures of the uniforms themselves.

Here are the references I'm using to come up with these colors:
  1. Britain - the Flag of Imperial India
  2. China - the Flag of the Qing Dynasty
  3. France - the Flag of the Nguyen Dynasty
  4. Japan - the Standard of the Prime Minister of Japan
    1. This one is anachronistic, so I may go with pale pink instead as a surrogate for the red/white flag.
    2. The color purple, specifically that of Wisteria, does have significance to Japan, so I may stick with it after all.
  5. Netherlands - the Prince's Flag
    1. While this specific flag wasn't still in use in the period, Orange is still the standard of the Dutch royalty.
    2. I feel the Prince's Flag does a good job of resembling the actual Flag of the Netherlands while providing a more distinct color to use than red or blue.
  6. Russia - The aforementioned Russian Green, which you can see several examples of in Google.
  7. Turkey - The Flag of the Ottoman Empire
