Round 2 is now complete.
2 more upsets as the higher seeds' gamble to play France in the tiebreak does not pay off.
Onto the quarterfinals!

I'd already lost twice as Austria, and was undefeated as France so far. Most of my better games were France games. These have been my only 2 player games, so I was completely undefeated as France until the tiebreaker.

I would have considered it more of a gamble to play as Austria just based on personal experience. I wonder what the ratio is of Austria wins vs France wins in the tournament. Maybe I'll look into that tomorrow. Is it really that much in Austria's favor? I know that's what people seem to think. There are certain things I like more about playing France as opposed to Austria.

Gotta root for Badivan1, the player that bested me. He was only one seed lower, and thoroughly outplayed me in the tiebreaker.
You don't know what I'm thinking...because I don't know what I'm doing.

55% Austria 45% France.
But i think most of the results are dictated by player skill difference rather than the perceived Austrian advantage.

The same thing happened in my match against LB. We'd both won as France, so it made sense for him to choose France in the tiebreak. I think it comes down to personal preference, although it's a lot easier to gamble as Austria in the mid-game, meaning giving lower seeds Austria's probably not a great call.

Heading into the tiebreaks, these were the tournament histories of each player:

Condude1 4-1 as France, 4-2 as Austria
Lb1785  5-0 as France, 4-1 as Austria
Badivan1 5-0 as France, 3-2 as Austria
Fatmo 5-0 as France, 3-2 as Austria

So in addition to having a preference for playing France, there is also a motivation not to let the opponent play France. Surprisingly, giving the lower seed Austria would appear to be an entirely sound decision.

Interesting contrast in the two games with Smith and Badivan. Both are in the fall 03 builds. In one game, each power has 11 centers. In the other, they are also even but down at 8 centers.

Condude and Cliff Dancer have split two games. I can't see a third game. Maybe that's in the course of being set up, or maybe I just missed something.

fwiw a decent chunk of it boils down to openings

Game 1: Austria opened Porcupine, France opened Swiss Split
Image
which leads to a fairly open situation where both powers can grow fairly fast

Game 2: Austria opened Italian, France opened Swiss Split
Image
this is a very closed/slow type open, all the more so given that France didn't roll the dice and let Austria into Munich in exchange for getting into Tyrolia and getting a Belgium build
1901 ending with one build per, and Italy/Germany basically being clogged up, makes for a much slower paced growth game... and spring 1902 basically being a "ok no one's really moving ANYWHERE" type round also slowed it down
