WWI Historical Update

Hey guys,

So appearantly there have been some troubles logging into the site...but I don’t know much about it. The Managment is on it though and they are notified. I’m not sure who has been experiencing this, but I have: when I clicked on “PlayDiplomacy.com”, Safari told me “This connection is not private, this may be a fake website trying to get your info”.(paraphrasing). So then I tapped “Show Details” and next “Enter www.playdiplomacy.com(not safe)”. But it seems to be safe, so, I dunno. Anyway, just want to be sure everyone can get their orders in, because this game is really going great.

The Entente and the New Central Powers are not getting along. Germany declared war on France(who has been sparing with Germany this whole game) and in return declarations have been flying across the board. Currently, Germany and Austria are at war with the entire Entente(Russia, England, and France) while The Ottoman Empire and The Kingdom of Italy are trying to remain neutral. Germany has a hold on Burgundy and a clear route to Paris...

“Paris, France
October 16, 1902

A Resolution Passed Unanimously by the
DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED National Assembly of France
at the Request of President Joubert

WHEREAS the French Republic has never engaged in any acts of aggression against the people or government of Germany, yet now faces a mortal threat from invading German armies currently occupying Burgundy, Alcase-Lorraine and many other of the best wine-growing regions of the Third Republic;

WHEREAS the German dictator Kaiser Wilhelm II and his puppet Reichstag and Chancellor von Boelow have unilaterally declared war on the people and government of France;

WHEREAS our Entente allies in Russia and England have loyally declared their support for our sovereignty and have pledged to join in resistance to German aggression; and

WHEREAS leaving this unprovoked invasion unanswered will only invite Germany to invade other innocent European nations still at peace, as they have already threatened to do;

HEREBY be it resolved that a state of War exists between the Third Republic and the Imperial State of Germany, and all patriotic Frenchmen in the mother country and living in French territories abroad shall muster all resources to defend their nation and defeat the German navies and armies deployed against us; and

HEREBY be it resolved that France bears no ill will to others whom Germany claims to be in alliance with, and that a continued state of peace and mutual respect will exist between the Third Republic and the Imperial House of the Hapsburgs in Vienna, the Imperial Kingdom of Italy in Rome, and the Imperial Seat of the Sultanate in Constantinople, and between France and all other European nations, unless the present state of peace is broken intentionally by the other party.

Given on this day the 16th of October in the year of our Lord 1902. Let us sing:

"Allons, enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
Contre nous, de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
Égorger nos fils, nos compagnes!

Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!"”

Mais oui, Tsar Nikolai, and Emperor Franz Josef, we so love your music! There is nothing like a waltz by Mozart or Schubert or a symphony by Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky (though we do not care so much for his 1812 Overture due to the subject matter) to stir the passion and soothe the heart! And you have a great Opera House in Vienna and who does not love the Kirov and Bolshoi Ballets in Russia? We are also partial to the wonderful operas of Italia!

So let us stop the rattling of sabers and charging of cannons, and all sit back and enjoy the languid tones of the violins of autumn and spring. Are you with us, Monsieur Kaiser, or are you playing a different tune?

E. Joubert

I must also point out that many magnificent composers (and magnificent songs) are from Russia, such as the song Коробе́йники. The great composers Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninoff and many more!

Tsar Nikolai

Agreed, now is the time for peace rather than war. However, I wanted to point out to the French that Vienna is of at least equal caliber to Paris. Some of the most famous musical composers of all time have resided there, and our opera houses have no equal on the continent.

Dear Chancellor, mon pauvre petit chou:

I am sorry your history lessons in Germany are not au pointe. We chose to leave Haiti a century ago because we believe in the rights of all men and wished to let them run their own country after they made it clear they wished to do so. We respect the rights of men to equality, liberty and fraternity, and have since our glorious revolution. Your lands have not yet experienced such a democratic burst of freedom, so we understand why you do not understand it well.

We too wish to continue to see peace flourish in all of Europe, though we worry about this coming spring and what shall happen if warmongers in some capitals shout down the peacemakers.

As for le Skagerrack, I cannot answer for the English, but I believe the good King Georges is only seeking a safe harbour for his vessels in the current stormy weather. That does not seem to us to be an unreasonable request.

The world is watching -- please allow the people of Holland (and Denmark) to continue to live their lives in freedom and democracy. We must all build crosses of lilies at the time of danger, and not crosses of iron.

Yours,

E. Joubert
France

Fortifying your front?! En Garde?! For all we know, these could be insults to the Germans!

But we know the French have achieved things. For example, being kicked out of Haiti...by their own slaves! The French participated in the only known successful slave revolt to date.

In light of this, we forgive France and wish to inform him that we are only making light of serious events. Do not take offense to our poor taste in humor, my good sir.

Now, on to more serious matters: why are there English Battleships in the Skagarrak?! Already we asked that England keep their navies to a minimum, but it seems as though the King is making a fool of us!

Chancellor von Bülow

Only known French achievement in 100 years. What merde!

What about the Eiffel Tower, monsieur, or the State of Liberty? Or the greatest novels and artworks of the past 100 years? I do not hear much coming from Germany but gloomy opera and beer belches.

I have had enough of your passive-aggressive threats and insults. We are fortifying our front and protecting our neighbours from further aggression this year.

En garde!

E. Joubert

=======From GERMANY Fall 1901 Orders =======
Gentlemen,

The Kaiser wishes to inform each of you that we have begun construction on the Panama Canal in the Americas! After your very own Ferdinand de Lesseps failed, we have now signed a contract with the U.S.!

After all, the Suez Canal is the only known French achievement in the last 100 years! But soon us Germans will be constructing a canal far supirior to even the Suez Canal. Our railway to Bagdad is also almost complete! German Engineers are among the best in the world.

Regards,
Chancellor von Bülow

Dear Your Excellency the Emperor:

War is no laughing matter, but we in France appreciate a good sense of humour, and commend you for your efforts to insert some levity into this cumbersome process of negotiations. I certainly hope every country's officers can control their troops from wayward actions now! We must refrain from le provacations and restore trade and trust and friendly football games, oui? I have myself forgotten le Affaire de Hollande already and am pleased to see that tulip prices have returned to normal.

Emperor, thank you for asking about our transportation project. I have been working on the railroad all the live-long day, just to pass the time away. You will soon be able to hear the whistle blowing, as soon as my head engineer, m. DuNoux, blows his horn.

Yours,

E. Joubert

Unfortunately, I am afraid our typist misspelled the heading to our transcripts. I have now corrected the error made by our dummkopf typist and have shown them the door. Now that the Kaiser has apologized, I assume that all of us plan on withdrawing our troops back to their respective military bases. I apologize for my sad attempt at a joke, but I could not resist the temptation of doing so. Let us hope that our troops do not have the ambition to invade other territories without orders. After the crisis in Holland, hopefully our situation can quiet down. Kaiser, are you ready to begin construction on the Berlin to Baghdad project? President Joubert, how are your railroad plans coming along?
Emperor Franz Josef I
of the House of Hapsburg

=======From GERMANY Spring 1901 Orders =======
I must apologize to all. My rash actions and poor decision making has all of Europe in a frenzy.

Please do not go to war over my unthoughtful remarks! My men will of course stay out of Holland. We ask that France remains clear of Belgium as well.

An apology to:
King George V
Tsar Nicholas II
And
President Joubert
As well as
Emperor Josef
Sultan Abdul
And
King Emmanuele III

On behalf of both
Káiser Wilhelm II
And Chancellor von Boelow
As well as
All of Imperial Germany

Most respectfully,
Káiser Wilhelm II

=======From RUSSIA Spring 1901 Orders =======
Dear Kaiser,
I find it very interesting that you have asked to conquer a country as if it were one of the simplest things in the world!

Invading a country is something serious and should not be treated as simple! What did you expect to be our reaction when you asked that?

Moreover, if you think that the sayings of peace are ridiculous, that shows your true intention!

And if your chancellor thinks this is not my concern, tell him that i demand some respect!

Because every european is a european, on the east or the west, and because of this i care for each and one of who needs help!

And if you think i may have been disrespectful then i shall of course, apologise, even though i was not my intention to be disrespectful in any manner.

So оправдание dear Kaiser for any misunderstandings that may have happened as to my intention

Yours,

Tsar Nikolai
Emperor of Russia
Saint Petersburg
P.S. -- I hope now that everything is solved, we can forget about all of this and continue with good relations dear cousin

=======From GERMANY Spring 1901 Orders =======
Gentlemen,

My request to annex Holland was just that, a request. Please do not tie your pants into knots.

It was very alarming to me, however, to hear of the Tsar’s remarks concerning my simple request. The President also said some confusing things. For example: “If the Kaiser continues his aggressive behavior...” and “bravo! We must band together to fight this threat!” All I have done is show courtesy to my neighbors!! I will not annex Holland—but I will not allow you to treat my nation this way!

Why have none of you responded to the below message? And why must I keep hearing rediculous things from the Tsar?!

“Gentlemen,

This delegation was meant for the Western members of the Entente, these matters were of no concern to the Tsar out east. Your violation of privacy between our delegations is extremely unsettling. Furthermore, your response to my request was extremely ill-mannered, impolite, discourteous, uncivil, ill-behaved, and unmannerly. These discussions exist to keep relations civil between our Nations, and you gentlemen seem keen on turning this into some kind of battle.

President Joubert, your repeated disrespect towards Emperor Josef and myself is uncalled for and shows your lack of courtesy and is considered by Kaiser Wilhelm himself to be insolent, impudent, and impertinent.

I would advise each of you to apologize at your earliest convenience, as Germany has shown nothing but the highest respect in all dealings with the Entente. Our sharing of proposed plans for annexation was a courtesy for all that was poorly responded to.

Chancellor von Boelow”

My chancellor was always polite and respectful, and in return you gentlemen are being hogs.

Let me put it as simply as I can: apologize or face the consequences!!!!

Regards,
Káiser Wilhelm II,
Káiser of Germany and King of Prussia”

I hope it’s not too confusing, and feel free to reply with your own favorite moments so far—but don’t compromise your alliances ;).

Re: WWI Historical Update

Well, the Holland crisis was certainly an interesting prelude to the war to come. At first, I planned on composing a simple declaration of war, but then I realized, what's the fun in doing that :D ? I ended up with the following statement, and I have to say I had a blast writing it!
=======From AUSTRIA Fall 1902 Orders =======
I have just received the following transcript from the Imperial Council. They have approved my request to declare war against the Russian empire and Britain in addition to the French Republic:
Imperial Council OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT
Vienna, October 14,1902 A.D.
WHEN a declaration of war is made, it is when the prospect of peace is insurmountable. For many a year, the heavy burden of peace has been lifted deftly by our continent. The events of the previous spring, however, have caused that weight to fall.
THE invasion of the provinces and countries of Spain,Belgium,Norway,and Rumania by the independent forces of the Triple Entente have proved the imperialistic tendencies of this alliance system. Rather than even pretending to justify their actions, the Entente power instead claims our ally, Germany (Deutschland), is the true aggressor. There are myriad flaws in this logic, but this council will only cite the glaring fallacies.
ONE:The orders entered in the spring of this year were unknown to that of other powers. Therefore, the offensive actions of the Entente would have taken place be it with Germany's supposed aggression or not.
TWO:To use a technique of Ad Hominen against Germany (Deutschland) without acknowledging the greater crimes you committed against the liberty you claim to stand for is deplorable.
THREE:The Entente only last year viciously condemned the mere request of Germany (Deutschland) to annex Holland, yet combined, you annex four times the territory they IMPLORED about owning.
THEREFORE, this congress hereby approves Emperor Franz Josef I's request to declare war on the Entente powers of the French Republic,Britain,and the Russian Empire. We also make NULL AND VOID all agreements made with the Entente powers.
(END TRANSCRIPT)
Emperor Franz Josef I
of the House of Hapsburg
Oh, and I also threw in my two cents on our "delegation" too.

Chancellor von Boelow has struck upon an important point. This delegation has rapidly become a group of parakeets wishing only to hear their own voices within the din of others. As opposed to negotiation, each of us is content with erecting impermeable walls of stubbornness. All I have heard so far from the Entente is a vilification of Germany's known and expressed interests as opposed to a counteroffer. While we are on the subject of imperialism, it is worth mentioning that British lands far exceed that of Germany's wildest dreams. France also possesses extensive lands in Africa and Asia. Is it unreasonable for Germany to aspire to be an imperial power of equal caliber? Also, how is invading Belgium for defensive purposes different than Germany invading Holland for defensive purposes from the British navy? I agree, Tsar Nicholas, that war must be avoided. If the Triple Entente takes offense to a German invasion of Holland, then I believe that a compromise is needed.
Emperor Franz Josef I
of the House of Hapsburg
All in all, this has been a very enjoyable experience, and I would happily sign up for another game! :)
Tactics, Comrades, tactics.
