Historically Accurate Group

Postby willie23 » 12 Apr 2018, 19:49

Hey gang,

After playing a few games of diplomacy here on the PlayDip site, I’ve come to a realization. Some people like myself really enjoy role playing as the leader of the country they are controlling from the time of 1901.

Let me explain: When I command Germany, I sign all of my messages as “Kaiser Wilhelm II”, it “Wilhelm II” or even “The Kaiser”. I act as a cousin to King George IV in England and to Tsar Nikolai in Russia.

Example:

Tsar Nikolai, Greetings from Imperial Germany. It would be my great pleasure to forge an alliance with my dear cousin.... Best Regards, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Emperor of Imperial Germany and King of Prussia.

This play style is not for everyone, but most people seem to enjoy it for the most part. Is there anyone out there interested in helping found this club. The name is still optional if you don’t want to go by HAG, and I really need some help here. Throw some ideas in!

I was thinking we could take it further and set the stage: the game would start with a prearranged alliance true to real life: Central Alliance of Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany, and the Russia, England, France alliance. When WWI broke out Italy jumped over to the English French team because they were hoping to get Tyrolia form Austria...etc. In this case, we could set up secondary goals: Italy gets extra points for holding Tyrolia by 1910 or something.

So, can I get some thoughts on this? Anybody want to join?

Thanks,
Willie

Any game with secondary goals like that would by necessity have to be a norank or friends game, probably a friends game.

Somebody did an invitational like this awhile back, I think. It's...fine,and obviously if you go into a game expecting that there's no issue...but it can be very grating in a regular game.

Yes, if this doesn’t work out I’ll do an invite game with some house rules. Friends or norank of course.

I really hope to get this going though.

I think that the best way to do this is to have the rankings done not by SCs but by historically accurate objectives for each country. These would have to be decided by a GM beforehand, and each country can have any # of them - all adding up to the same total value. So Italy would of course want Trieste and Tyrolia, Russia could want Serbia and Armenia, Turkey could want Bulgaria and Greece, etc.

Of course, there should be some overlap to influence the historical accurateness of it all.

And lastly, there should be a limit of time after which point the countries must have reached their objectives. If you really want to go for historical accuracy, you can say 4 game years (or five with the first year being only manuevering within the own country's borders as a sort of build up).

Anyways, this sort of thing sounds pretty interesting. Obviously don't take all of my suggestions at face value cause I pretty much just thought them up.

Those sound like great ideas! That’s just the kind of stuff we need. We need at least 7 people to start a new club, so can a I count you in? If not, let’s begin planning a game that includes these house rules. I’ll start compiling them and I’ll talk to my history teacher and let’s see if we can’t grt this rolling.

At this point I’m thinking we’ll do an invite game. I’ll make another post with all the rules, then, I’ll send invitations, and, if it works we may start the group.

I sign my orders as Ivan the Terrible, Baron Von Pound Yer Ass, Yolanda Squatpump and occasionally as Master Stabber ... but am always interested in being historically accurate.

Okay, anyone that sees still following this, I have made an Invite game and you all of course are welcome, though I believe everyone here has been sent an invite or already joined. If we get 7 players, or even more, we could still start this group! So hold on, this isn’t over!

Also, PM me if you are interested in the WWI Historical game.

Best,
Willie

With the caveat that I am not in charge of this at all, you generally need more than 7 people to start an official group, especially one that's kind of a less broad niche like this. Don't take that as discouragement at all, I'm not by any means saying you shouldn't pursue this, just that it might end up being an informal group rather than a formal one, unless it really takes off and you get a few games worth of players interested in it.
