Many thanks Custer. I’m reliving a dream I had about 40 years ago. Younger, footloose & fancy free with a BMW in Africa. I rode there 7 years before normal life caught up with me & consigned long distance motorcycling to memory lane. I plan to live it again while I still can, but this time in USA.
In November, only CA, AZ & possibly NM, because it’s winter & I need to make preparations. If I can make summer trips as well then everywhere becomes possible. In Africa we’d ride 500 miles a day without hesitation & the BMW I just got is way better than the beast I rode back then (although obviously I’m much older).
I’m learning all the maintenance protocols online & will be accumulating spares, specialist tools etc while in AZ this December. You never know where drama can strike & have to be prepared. USA has the same big remote areas as Africa, where self sufficiency is a benefit.
I spent 12+ years in USA, but saw nothing. Orange County in SoCal was all I learned, apart from a few long weekend trips in nearby states. This time I want to “see America”.
Orange County is representative of only a poor quality reality show, not the real thing.
I will meet Americans in all the rural areas I’ve never yet seen & looking forward to every moment. At least one of my 3 boys is now planning to get a suitable motorcycle & ride with me next year. I couldn’t wish for more. I’ve loved adventures from when I was a teenager & happy another one is possible. Thanks for the welcome.
