Draws-Open or Secret?

Poll ended at 13 Mar 2021, 20:44

Yes, leave draws open ballot since the first games were open ballot.

No, it's reasonable to go back to secret ballot.

I'm ok with either option, I don't think it makes a difference.

PDL Draws

Postby TTBen » 01 Mar 2021, 20:44

Should draws remain open ballot for the rest of the season? I mistakenly created the first round of games open ballot, the rules stated secret ballot. There has been some discussion on the commentary thread that it cannot be changed for future games at this point. Please add comments if you feel strongly.

I feel strongly that secret ballot is better than open ballot in a tournament setting. It makes it more feasible to try to get a better score whereas if it's known that it is you who vetos the draw, you risk alienating nations who might be willing to cooperate.

Go back to secret from now on, no big deal.

I'm only commenting on this thread because I was part of the discussion in the commentary thread that (apparently) led to this thread. I'm not going to vote because I'm not (yet) playing in the league.

I am a firm believer that if you are going to play noDIAS--which is clearly the case in the league as it seems totally uncontroversial--secret ballot is better. Also, as someone who might play later this year, I really want to see a return to secret ballot. I do not want to play any games with open ballot and noDIAS.

The only potential issue is one of fairness. We have already had a game end in a prematurely voted 2way draw, perhaps (I would say likely) using the pressure of open ballot voting to force the two big powers to vote it up instead of possibly seeing if they had a chance to solo if the game had continued.

If that game had gone on to end in a solo, the two big powers would have seen their scores dramatically shift.

But looking at the results in this thread, it seems like everyone wants to go to secret ballot, including one of the two players in question, who's already posted in the thread. So if there is unanimous agreement that the fairness issue is not a big deal, then there's no issue at all, really.
