Given there was interest from some to participate, but from none to organise, I've taken it upon myself to organise the first ever PlayDiplomacy Community Shield!

It would be a stand-alone exhibition game that would in no way affect any PDL standings and participants wouldn't gain or lose anything by taking or not taking part in it, other than being able to brag about the result when they win.

Participants would be invited to take part, and if anyone would reject the invitation, the next person on the ranking list* would be invited. I've set a deadline for the first batch of invitees to come back by 12:00 GMT (London time) on Friday 11th December, but hopefully I will hear sooner so that I can send out new invitations until we have 7 accepts. As it stands, I've invited 10 people (as I assumed based on what has been said in the forum a few declines).

The game would be played with almost the same rules as PDL:
- 48/24/24 deadlines
- Map variant: Standard
- Stats: rank
- Public: no
- Variants: Classic
- Map: mapv2
- Game type: regular (so it is easier for spectators to follow), unless 4 people insist on "anonymous_countries"

I also think it is best to just have countries assigned at random (as in PDL), so not to create any room for somebody selecting the wrong country when signing up (but if the 6 other players insist on another country selection process, I am happy to change this).

_______
* the ranking list has been prepared by my proprietary AI system.
01 D1 1 another - ACCEPTED
02 D1 2 V - INVITED
03 D1 3 Hedge trimmer - INVITED
04 D1 4 Martz - INVITED
05 D1 5 Squasher - INVITED
06 D2 1 Czar99 - INVITED
07 D1 6 Groo - DECLINED
08 D1 7 MasterGR - INVITED
09 D2 2 Iamnobody - TENTATIVELY INVITED
10 D1 8 StarkAdder - TENTATIVELY INVITED
11 D2 3 Latanst
12 D1 9 Guns of Brixton
13 D2 4 JoeHoya06
14 D1 10 Charleroi
15 D2 5 GeoViBase

Current status:

The game WILL GO AHEAD!

01 D1 1 another - ACCEPTED #1
02 D1 2 V - DECLINED
03 D1 3 Hedge trimmer - INVITED *
04 D1 4 Martz - DECLINED
05 D1 5 Squasher - INVITED *
06 D2 1 Czar99 - ACCEPTED #2
07 D1 6 Groo - DECLINED
08 D1 7 MasterGR - ACCEPTED #3
09 D2 2 Iamnobody - ACCEPTED #4
10 D1 8 StarkAdder - ACCEPTED #5
11 D2 3 Latanst - TENTATIVELY ACCEPTED *
12 D1 9 Guns of Brixton - TENTATIVELY ACCEPTED *

* - so we are waiting till 12:00 to see if Hedge trimmer and Squasher get back to me, otherwise, we have now 7 players to get the game going! Up to now, 2 players have expressed desire to have anonymous countries, so most probably we will have the game be played as regular, which I think will make it more fun to follow and comment on (theoretically).

The deadline has passed and here are the 7 players who have confirmed their desire to participate!

StarkAdder

Guns of Brixton

So the game 186970. "PDCS 2020" has been created and is awaiting the players till 12:00 GMT Sunday 13th December. Not enough players expressed preference for the game to be "anonymous countries", so the game will be "regular" (which I think might make it more fun for any of potential viewers). Also, we have a very equal selection of players from D1 (4) and D2 (3).

Given the nature of the game and that it is not anonymous, I think comments here about it (both from viewers and participants) should be encouraged.

There is no reason why any active game (friends, nonranked or ranked) should ever be discussed. Period. A dangerous practice to condone in PDL or in any game.

I seem to remember reading a comment previously, maybe by V, that commenting in the forum on active games is against the rules, I believe independently of whether the game is anonymous or not. My guess is that the logic behind it is that observers should not be in a position to influence the strategy of the participants. Perhaps one of the mods can confirm that that’s indeed the case?

11. No post on the Forum should describe actions within an active game. After Action Reports should only be made when the game has ended; similarly, comments on players and their actions in games should not be made for active games.

This is the rule I referenced in January, when this was previously discussed. There might be a possible dispensation?

In the past, when special dispensation was given, it was stipulated that discussion be on a 2-year delay, so for example you couldn’t discuss S01 until the game was in S03. I can’t imagine a more generous dispensation would be given.

Good luck in this game.

Working to have the 2021 release soon (maybe this weekend). I've updated my scoring spreadsheet to give more details and plan to embed links to each game in it as well. I will likely include a game like this in next year's plan but it will be optional and not effect promotion or relegation.

I wasn't aware it was against site rules to "comment" on games (by which I mean - a sports style commentary, not any negotiations). My intention was to recreate the commentary that has become so popular around f2f and virtual diplomacy - especially lately, done by people like Chris Martin and the DBN.

But if it is against the site rules, then of course that should not happen! (And seems like there also isn't any hunger in the community?)
