One player takes on the roles of the East German Stasi and the Border Police. The Stasi have significant powers to blackmail, detain, question and imprison dissidents, in order to undermine and prevent their escape plans. The Border Police try to capture escaping dissidents or, if all else fails, shoot them.
The other players (up to five) take on the roles of dissident groups, who try to get as many of their members over the Berlin Wall into the free West.
The board is a central section of East Berlin with the Wall and border defences and the neighbourhoods close to it, including streets, shops, cafés, restaurants, cultural sights, the river Spree, factories, ministries and the infamous Stasi prison.
Some of the inspiration for the game comes from the old classic "Escape from Colditz" game, but my game is considerably more complex and should be a lot more interactive and cooperative for the dissidents and also a lot more fun for the "bad guy".
