I Got A Job From A Diplomacy Game!

Postby Fuddin » 20 May 2019, 00:39

Okay, so the title is a bit of a stretch, but I was in a job interview about a month ago where the interviewer asked, "Tell me about a time you took a calculated risk", and I told him about this epic game of Diplomacy I played where one guy became so powerful that he was threatening to win the entire game, and the rest of us were all trying to stop him, and the other people all wanted to do a boring move that would lead to an uncertain future, but I wanted to do this highly risky move that would either control the threat, or lose us all the game immediately if the guy predicted it, and I convinced everyone to do it my way, and it worked out. (See https://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=56059 for the AAR - the pictures seem to have gone missing, though). I ended up getting the job.

I revealed that I play Diplomacy when I interviewed for my current job, and -- while this has yet to actually happen -- the boss asked me to organize an office game at some point. I was surprised by how many people around here said "Oh yeah, I used to play that."

Be careful. Your boss may stab you in the back more quickly than a 6 SC Italy stabs at Austria.

Thanks! :) The interviewer did not know the game, but I did briefly describe it and emphasize the social nature of the game and the necessity of convincing other players to do what you want them to do.

Lol... 6 SC Italy. That's not a real thing. ;)

(At least not in my gunboats games.)

Oh, in the game I linked to in the AAR, Italy had not 6 but 9 centers by 1904. And he was the most powerful person on the board.

Congrats!

Although I wish you'd done the boring move and I'd won the game :D
