Colors of the Nations

Postby G0kartmozart » 07 Jun 2017, 20:19

I am currently thinking about designing a version of the classic diplomacy map, and was hoping maybe even to have the version on this site, if the developers like it enough!!
but I have to say, the color scheme I have decided on is a bit different for each of the nations:

England is in a corvette red, I think a standard color for the British
France is in dark royal blue, reflecting what this site has currently
Italy is in green...I think that's fairly obvious.
Austria is in gold, I know Germany is currently gold, but the Hapsburgs are this ancient family and I think are more of the "oldschool" monarchical type than the comparatively modern German empire. therefore, Austria gets the gold.
Russia is silver, perhaps white, reflecting the harsh vast wintery landscape of this Slavic empire. suitable.
Germany I have wrestled with, but I think a nice stark BLACK goes well next to red, blue and white...anything when you think about it. black is the new black.
turkey...well shoot, all of the good colors are taken. woulda given him red, coulda given him gold, shoulda given him silver... oh well, I think a solid violet will work with gold and silver colors next door. it's an imperial color, reminds me of the old roman or even byzantine imperial colors perhaps. the sultan wills it!
the oceans are in a light blue, as they are.
the neutral nations I struggle with, as they are only around for so long, yet are big in the beginning... how about a light orange sherbet color? I think that'll do on that.

who wants to see this new map on this site? I think the more options the better, and when i'm finished with all the other little ornaments, I think y'all are gonna like it !!

I could go with that color scheme. I kinda don't like a purple Russia.
Maybe a gray Germany? And an off-white Russia?
Text might be difficult to read with black German provinces.

Seems a shame that Turkey seems to get the short end of the stick here. In retrospect, thinking about my time in Turkey, I think that the turquoise/teal color that is already assigned to that power might be the most appropriate.

Alternatively, I can see:

Yellow for England (The sun never sets)
Red for Turkey (The flag)

One other thing that you need to consider, no matter what colors you choose, is the impact of your choices on people who are color blind. Using the HSB scale You need to play with "saturation" and "brightness" to ensure that a gray-scale rendition of the same map adequately distinguishes the various powers.

Finally, what about uncontrolled territories? Maybe using Black (with white text) for them would be a nice touch to make them really stand out.

Well, for classic color schemes there is the old 1970s wood black set
England = Dark blue
France = light blue
Italy = Green
Austria = red
Turkey = Yellow
Russia = white
Germany = black

My consideration is legibility/contrast. A black or a very dark blue makes things difficult.

So perhaps the impassibles can be black, and white used for the starting neutrals.

The seven working colours could be

Sky Blue
Green
Yellow/gold
Pink (at least, not a deep Red, and of a shade easily distinguished from Green for those who are colour-blind)
Purple
Ochre
Silver
Monash
