VERSES

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men they looked up with faces pale;
The dragon’s ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain smoked beneath the moon;
The dwarves they heard the tramp of doom.
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim
To dungeons deep and caverns dim
We must away, ere break of day,
To win our harps and gold from him!

(Tolkien 1937)

Please use this forum thread to provide any closing comments. I would especially appreciate feedback about:
  • What you thought about the variant's theme
  • What you thought about the variant map's structure, rules, and fairness
  • What you thought about your opponents
  • What you thought about the GM

I want to thank asudevil for stepping in during an unorthodox situation at the end. I also have great thanks for GhostEcho, who proved a very reliable Rhovanion (when we started with a much less reliable one).

There's not too much to say on my side. The stalemate line was there and I took it. I do feel bad about knocking Mordor out, though a 5-player draw would have been silly.

The only interesting thing happened in the last year. I'd skipped a build to make it super-clear that my grab for Ered Mithrin was a "balance of power" move and not personal ambition. I'd stated that openly: but Eriador (without communicating) disbanded his Iron Hills unit instead of Lefnui or Weather Hills as I was trying to force. Then Gondor declared he didn't want a 4-way - but he never really pushed the weakness in the line the double "missing" units created in the East. As it turned out, Eriador's fleet push diverted too many Gondorian units to have anything to back up a push, which I suppose shows me, because I was a bit dubious about Eriador's throwing so much into the Western edge.

Gondor still could have cracked Near Rhun in the Fall (nrh R irh, erb build, but the point would be nrh -> esg, wol -> cel, to isolate and take dgu in the next year). I wanted to try the attack dgu -> wil (esg support), mkw -> dgu (cel support?) to break that up, but without time to communicate properly for pretty much all of the past week I decided not to, since the result might be losing nrh and leaving dgu open, with only one build and both dgu and erb vulnerable. But I was surprised to see Gondor propose the draw without even trying anything on that front.

This seems a lot like the MEVIII map: images are gone there, so I'm not certain. It seems very "sticky" in the middle - I'd expect most games to get stalled and draw.
