PDET Rules clarification on medal boards

Postby WHSeward » 26 Nov 2015, 16:32

Medal round boards will be anon country with random allocation. Section G. ANONYMITY of the tournament rules apply in full. Section E.2 is clarified as follows:

1) The tournament winner will be the gold board soloist or the participant in a gold board draw with the highest final tournament score. All other tournament places will be determined by final tournament score.
2) Final tournament score will be the entrant's 4 highest preliminary round scores plus their medal round score.
3) If there is a tie, the tie-break described in E.1(d) will be used.
4) If there is still a tie, ending SC count in the medal round is the final tie-break.

I object to this "rule clarification" regarding the tournament winner, which is really just a new rule. A rule like this, which would have no doubt affected how people approached the tournament, should have been added at the start, or not at all. I also don't think it will have a positive impact on the gold table to have different people playing for different results that depend on who's who.

If the Gold Table results in a draw, the tournament should result in a draw.

Sure. My recollection may be off, but I don't recall tournament points serving as a tie-breaker for the overall tournament winner. If that has always been the rule, then I withdraw my objection.

If not, I think it is a poor rule to add at this stage. It is a poor addition because, had it been known at the start, it might have caused players to enter more tournament games in order to improve their overall standing, or to play differently. I think it is also a poor rule generally because it means the Gold Table does not stand alone, and that other factors like tournament standing may affect the result. For example, if tournament standing impacts the overall winner, Charlie and KoD would be at a significant disadvantage. Nobody would want to three-way draw with them, as Charlie and KoD would always win the tiebreaker in that scenario. I think it will make for a much better game if the Gold Table result stands alone.

E.2(b) says that tournament points for the drawing players is the first tie-break for the tournament winner.

The rules were written with only a gold board in mind and then the silver and bronze boards were tacked on. It is a little ambiguous what happens to their final placings, so these rules clarify their outcome. They don't change anything for the tourney winner.

@shiv, nah, this is the end of the PDET, not the start of a new event.

@Conq, as WHS pointed out, the rule was not really changed. It was there at the beginning. I would describe it as a revision for clarification.

Of course, in my position, I would certainly prefer points from the preliminary round not impact final standing. Would love something like Carnage scoring. But, it seems a little late to change unless there is unanimity for something different.
