Question: for this and the magic thread, if I started a 2-year project towards the end of year 0 (as I was a tiny bit of a latecomer) but did still manage to announce it during the first year, is it still done now (the beginning of year 2)?

Intense farming and heavy cav are completed. For me there is no growth penalty for hills and mountains, and a cataphract charge will break the morale of nonprofessional soldiers.

I'd say any project started in a year is equivalent - so start of year 0 vs end of year 0 is the same IMO. Makes it easier.

pm sjg for that.

The Councils of Life have reported success on the new models of freight ships, improved refining techniques, and new model ballistas. Construction in the docks of Kazis have already shifted to the new model, the ore processing centers of the valley are implementing the new techniques, and the new ballistas are being brought forward to help bolster the defenses of our nation. Priority for those are first the mountain pass garrisons, then Kazis' port, then each of the other cities of Gold, then those installed on the navy's ships.

New projects have caught the eye of the Councils, presented and pushed forward by enterprising merchants.

Armor Padding - one of the primary suppliers of armor in the valley, who's recently invested heavily in the importing of Nidavelliri forging techniques/equipment, was emboldened by the creation of the Obsidian Guard. The current Returned, with their skeleton form, are more vulnerable to bludgeoning or concussive impacts, vs piercing. As such, armor for them should be designed to mitigate brute impacts, and not worry as much about piercing blows like arrows. Our current designs already incorporate it to some extent, but this merchant sees considerable room for improvement - as well as future profits.

New Model Galleys - our current galley fleet, which was designed to protect and patrol our shipping in the Obsidian Sea, could use some improvements. Naval architects in Kezis have put forward new designs for galleys that would increase their size and speed, by adding more ranks of oars and oars-Returned. Two models are being proposed - one smaller, meant for ramming, and one larger, meant for boarding and with more artillery.

Improved Crossbow - the use of Crossbows by our Returned is seen to be more useful than that of bows, from experience in the recent skirmishing. The lower skill of Returned makes these easier to use weapons more impactful on the battlefield. A number of improvements to these weapons, ranging from range, speed, and impact force/penetration are proposed by various engineers - and the development of multiple new models may prove important should the orcish migrations continue.

All will take 2 years (Year 4)

Most of the Owlmen’s needs are met with some sort of magic, leaving their knowledge of science and technology somewhat lacking. Under the leadership of Skylord Sekrwa and the Aerie, new investments are being made to advance Dhalro’s technological standing:

- Camel Riders: Teaching a handful of warriors how to mount a camel and use it in warfare. 3 years

- Food Storage: A project in the subterranean districts of Ak-Tari to create large bunkers capable of holding food and drink. These are to be used in the event of an especially bad dry season or war. 2 years

- Dhalroan Silk: Experimenting with the various silk worms of Dhalro’s oases to enhance the beauty and softness of its silk. A special class of artists and mystics will focus on creating innovative, vibrant designs for citizens. 2 years

The technological advances of the Na'athari have been completed and replaced by new projects:
We are researching how to create stronger fortifications for the city of Volkaan. We estimate that this will take 4 years to complete.

We are also researching new methods for road-building to allow us to improve transportation. We estimate that this will take 2 years to complete.

Finally we are researching how to build solid structures underground which we can use as living space and for transportation. This will take 4 years to complete.

The Councils of Life have reported success on the new models of galleys, armor, and crossbows. The fleet is expected to slowly transition to the new designs over the next few years - while the Obsidian Guard is immediately phasing in the new armor, and military stockpiles of crossbows are being made.

New projects have caught the eye of the Councils, presented and pushed forward by enterprising merchants.

Improved Pikes - a mercenary observing the Obsidian Guard remarked on the advantage another increase in pike length would create - as well as possible design improvements. Although likely to source some from Nidavellir, being able to improve upon the non-enchanted portion of their (and our) designs would be useful.

Water Wheel Improvements - The rivers flowing through our valley are a great opportunity - and the development of new water wheels and mills, and new applications for them, will start to harness these better.

Trebuchet - the development of a new large, counterweight driven siege engine that can be put to bear on the most powerful of defensive fortifications.

All will take 2 years (Year 6)

These projects are also finished and being used. The improved longships will get reflected later, allowing my smaller craft to carry even more manpower when needed.
