I've read that passage above like seven times and I can't really keep the thread together for more than about four words, so like. At the very least somebody needs to confiscate my modhammer for the night.

To be fair, Solzhenitsyn's translators have been notoriously bad. Wish someone would retranslate The Gulag Archipelago, because some of his other stuff has been redone.

But more importantly, I think that was a yes. Now I need to plot my modkills carefully...

I have... what I think is... rum? Probably? With Coke Zero? It took me about five tries to type that.

Women's barbershop is way more raucous than you might imagine.

I didn't say already! My chorus qualified for international competition, 2nd place in our area. We're sorta celebrating.

Congrats! Do you have to travel overseas soon, then?

Ha! No. International = US & Canada. Last year we were in Halifax. This year is Florida.

Though we are trying to expand overseas.

Parabellum wrote:Also, I'm procrastinating on my last paper by starting The Gulag Archipelago, which I've been wanting to read for years, but never had time. This paragraph pretty much describes every mafia game I've ever been in.

"If any pre-revolutionary engineer was not yet exposed as a traitor, then he could certainly be suspected of being one. And what accomplished villains these old engineers were! What diabolical ways to sabotage they found! Nikolai Karlovich von Meck, of the People's Commissariat of Railroads, pretended to be terribly devoted to the development of the new economy, and would hold forth for hours on end about the economic problems involved in the construction of socialism, and he loved to give advice. One such pernicious piece of advice was to increase the size of freight trains and not to worry about heavier than average loads. The GPU exposed von Meck, and he was shot: his objective had been to wear out rails and roadbeds, freight cars and locomotives, so as to leave the Republic without railroads in case of foreign military intervention! When, not long afterward, the new People's Commissar of Railroads, Comrade Kaganovich, ordered that average loads should be increased, and even doubled and tripled them (and for this discovery received the Order of Lenin along with others of our leaders) - the malicious engineers who protested this became known as limiters. They raised the outcry that this was too much, and would result in the breakdown of the rolling stock, and they were rightly shot for their lack of faith in the possibilities of socialist transport." -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago pp. 44-45.

Wow. This makes so much more sense as a metaphor for Mafia when I can keep all the words strung properly together.

I mean I guess if you wanna qualify deathbed conversion as an effective recompense for the literal slaughter of children that's your thing.

It's not really a matter of what I think is just, it's a matter of what's true within the Star Wars universe. Vader's clearly hanging with Obi Wan and Yoda at the end of The Return of the Jedi.
