A family discussion in the Sohl household, with the other adults (James and Rhian) and elders (Giordano, Lydia) present

V - You’ve got to be kidding me!

A - Hold on now Dina.

V - Am I the only sane person here? One, they don’t know the first thing about each other. Two, they’re both too young. Three… I can’t think of a three.

G - She’s a princess, and she was bound to be married off sooner or later.

L - Isn’t it better that it be to Max? At least that way, she could still stay here with us.

J - They’re right Vardina, this is the best of both worlds.

R - You’re also overlooking the fact that your son is going to marry into royalty.

V - That boy is going to make me turn grey before my time, but I never was able to control him, but August, she’s so fragile right now. How is she going to feel about this?

G - She probably knows that she’ll be married off sooner or later. Hopefully she’ll be happy at least to know that she’s marrying into a family that already thinks of her as one their own.

V - I’m just scared that they aren’t ready for this.

A - And I’d say your probably more nervous about it than they are.

As Giordano’s image came up on the screen, Max stood to attention.

The way they addressed each other it was clear that the relationship here was between a superior and a subordinate. It was official and more like a low-key interrogation than a conversation.

M - Grandfather, It’s good to see you again.

G - I hear you have some important news to share.

M - I do, sir.

He knew his grandfather already knew everything he was about to say, but clearly wanted to hear it from Max himself, who continued.

M - I am to be raised to noble status… and married to the princess August, a month from now.

G - And how did such a wonderful thing come to pass?

M - An offer was made… and I humbly accepted.

G - Naturally, because who would refuse the wishes of a king?

Yep, he knew everything.

G - And yet, you did, didn’t you?

M - …. I merely pointed out to his royal highness that the manner in which I would best be able to serve the needs of his kingdom and it’s people, might be… compromised, if I were sworn to serve him with the unquestioned loyalty that the oath requires.

G - So you did…. So you did.

Max knew this quite affirmation was about as close to hearing the words “I’m proud of you”, as he would ever hear from his grandfather.

Giordano didn’t demand respect, he commanded it. Something his daughter had never been able to do with the boy.

Giordano, Atrwys and Vardina had come to the Sacian home to discuss the possibility of Daniel securing broadcasting rights for the ceremony from Deseret.

August didn’t care much about the conversation and had other plans. There was only one person she wanted to see, and if she was home, she was likely only in one place… the studio.

As she walked in, she could see ZiZi’s legs, covered in overalls, but her top half was obscured behind a wide canvas.

A - Hello Auntie ZiZi.

ZiZi’s head appeared above the canvas, a mix of blue and green paint on her cheek where she’d clearly scratched an itch on her face. A face that lit up in recognition of the little girls voice

Z - August, darling. Oh please do come in. I’ve been here all afternoon being terribly artistic and creative, but there’s been nobody else to watch and appreciate me doing it.

Typical ZiZi, and in typical fashion, she didn’t hesitate to jump to the matter at hand.

Z - So, you’re getting married. I suppose it’s too much to hope that you came here to ask me to design your wedding dress?

The thought hadn’t even occurred to August, but she was immediately excited by the prospect.

A - Would you? Really? Thank you Auntie, I don’t know what to say.

Z - Just let me know of any religious conventions that need to be observed in the design.... I have to know the rules first, so I understand how I can bend them -fashionably - but all in the best possible taste.

ZiZi waited for a response from August, then realised the girl was looking nervously at the floor.

She sat down and motioned the princess to sit as well. She could see there was something weighing heavily on the young princess.

Z - I suppose you have some questions, and as Vardina is the mother of your future husband you can hardly expect her advice to be entirely impartial…. so, you need a second opinion. Come on, out with it, tell me what’s on your mind.

As soon as she started to speak, she couldn’t stop. Everything came pouring out of her. ZiZi couldn’t help but wrap the child in her arms. She was confused, nervous, insecure and a little bit scared of going back home.

She was still angry with her father, and being married off without a say in the matter wasn’t doing anything to help on that front. Then there was Max, whom she’d never met and knew very little about.

ZiZi wasted no time in spilling the beans on her husband to be.

Z - As a child he was such an obnoxious little brat, at least he was when his grandfather wasn’t about.

A - Elder Giordano? Isn’t he like, the vice-president or something?

Z - Gio, yes. They don’t call him the “velvet hammer” for nothing. He didn’t stand for the boys nonsense. He has a way delivering harsh truths, but never in a way thats cruel or unkind. But you’d still know you’d been taken down a peg or two.

A - I’ve never seen that side of him

Z - Well, of course not darling. Why would you ever need to see that side of him, when you’re already practically perfect in every way?

ZiZi was always flattering her with compliments like that.

Z - The point is, young Maximus has come a long way in short space of time. He’s certainly exceed my expectations for him. Knowing the family he comes from as you do, don’t you think he might also surpass yours?

A - Well, maybe. But marriage back home isn’t like it is here. How could we ever have something like you and Daniel have?

Z - Daniel was the most handsome, most eligible bachelor on Mars, with a media empire across two planets. I was of noble birth and a recording artist with a religious message to spread. I don’t think it would be unkind to say that our initial pairing was more a marriage of mutual convenience than it was one of true love.

A - But, I don’t see that when I look at you two.

Z - That’s because Daniel and I were able to find shared passions that brought us closer together, and we supported each other in other areas of life. Relationships aren’t easy. You have to work at them, but if you put the work in, the rewards… well they can be wonderful.

A - I hope so, but in Deseret, it’s a man’s world, not like here, where I can be anything I want if I’m good enough at it.

Z - August sweetie, it might be men who run the world, but they always have to come home.... And it’s we who rule the home.

The Royal Wedding
August nervously waited in the bridal room. She never liked be the center of attention, but now everyone’s eyes would be on her. King Bryan had opened up the royal cathedral for the wedding, The Cathedral of the Madeleine as it was known eons ago, the cathedral was deck out in royal luxury with ruby incrusted crosses, handcrafted glass stained windows, a giant red carpet going down the aisle, and a golden statue of Jesus above the podium. It was the most beautiful place in all of Salt Lake.
She was glad that all her family could be their for it, it’s been a whole year since she last saw her brothers Hershel and Benjamin, and her cousins and everyone else. Even Tyler with his new wife were going to be their. Atrwys, Vardina and Yarin as well, though she was saddened when she learned ZiZi wasn't able to come, she had some business back in the Entinates she had to tend to. Something about a cousin, August couldn’t remember? She still was upset at her father… but this might be the last time she sees him in years, and regardless of what happens, he is still her father.
Yarin entering the palace was a bit of a hassle, as he is a business man with a fleet of luxury casino-liners, the nobles were not happy to see him. Gambling is illegal in Deseret as it is an embodiment of the sin of greed. When Haythem White and his goons stopped him Infront of the palace gate, she thought there might be trouble, luckily a teenage boy came along. He didn’t look like a person from Desert, he was abnormally tall for his age, like a person from mars would be. He was able to send White away before Vardina ran up and hugged him, almost knocking the boy over.
“Max! oh it’s so good to see you.”
This must be Maximus, her husband to be. August always knew one day she would have to be married, after all its her duty as a princess of Deseret, and according to some of her male counterparts her only duty. She was just glad this boy had a good family, and was… really attractive. Vardina had told August all about Maximus on the way to Deseret, but she didn’t mention that.
Maximus looked over at August, seeming a bit more nervous himself.
“You must be princess August, it good to finally meet you your grace. Your father has told me many things about you.” He bends down and kisses August’s hand. August turned bring red just thinking about this.
Suddenly, there is a knock on the door.
“August its time.”
It was her mother, Sofia. August was a lot like her mother, while her father had always been quiet and dutiful, her mother was inquisitive and social. The house of Boise was known for its sickly and frail family members, which August inherited, but her mother was not like that. Sofia was the strongest women August knew, maybe only second to Catherine. While in public she was the epidemy of what a noblewoman should be, behind closed doors it was her that ruled the household. Half of prince Roberts ideas as master of war was hers to begin with. Sofia was upset that August was wearing one of ZiZi’s dresses for the wedding instead of hers, but forgave her daughter for that.
As August exited the Bridal room and walked into the cathedral, she could see all of the people they’re for the event. While only about 1000 people could fit I the Cathedral itself, commoners from all over Salt Lake stood outside to get a look at the bride to be, and both the royal television station and broadcasters from the PCG were their to record the event live for both nations to see. On the left side of the cathedral, she saw the PCG representatives. President Meurig Hallora, Giordano Sohl, Gabriel Alonso all had front row seats to the wedding, along with Atrwys, Vardina and Yarin at Maximus’s request. On the right side of the cathedral, was the entirety of the Taylor family, Catherine, Amelia, along with the king himself and all of the members of the Small counsel, except for Haytham White, who was preforming the wedding as was his duty as high priest. August held her fathers’ arm as he walked her down the aisle. Maximus in a dark blue suit was already at the altar, along with his best man, Prince Jack.
August was almost shacking with nerves, all of the people and cameras on her terrified her, if she messed up right now all of the world would see it. She felt like running straight out of that cathedral, until her father patted her arm.
“Its going to be ok August, I’m so proud of you.”
Her father wasn’t the kind of man who would praise people. Even when she would get top marks on her exams, he would only nod. This meant a lot to her, and gave her the strength to carry on. As she reached the alter, her father let her go, and she stared into Maximus’s eyes for the first time. The ceremony progressed and before August knewit, it was time to say their vows.
Maximus went first.
“August, I Maximus of the Sohl family of the Phonix Corporate Group, promise to protect you from all that would harm you. I promise to laugh with you, cry with you, and grow with you. I will love you when we are together and when we are apart. I promise to support your dreams and to respect our differences, and to love you and be by your side through all the days and nights of our lives. I, Maximus Infront of the gods, choose you August to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, trusting what things I will discover. I will respect you as a person, a partner, and an equal. There is little to say that you haven’t already heard, and little to give that is not already freely given. I marry you with no hesitation or doubt, and my commitment to you is absolute. Do you take me to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
“I do.” Then August went.
“Maximus, I princess August of the Taylor family of the kingdom of Deseret, take you as you are, loving who you are now and who you are yet to become. I promise to listen to you and learn from you, to support you and accept your support. I will celebrate your triumphs and mourn your losses as though they were my own. I will love you and have faith in your love for me, through all our years and all that life may bring us. Today, surrounded by people who love us, I choose you, Maximus, to be my partner. I am proud to be your wife and to join my life with yours. I vow to support you, push you, inspire you, and, above all, love you, for better or worse, in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, as long as we both shall live Do you take me to be your lawfully wedded wife?.”
“I do.”
“You may now kiss the bride”
As Maximus leaned in and kissed August, the people of the kingdom and the PCG cheered in approval, none being louder than the crown prince himself. flowers and streamers soured though the cathedral, and August felt like she was the most important girl in the world.

After the statements made by Tyler were finished, Jack pulled his brother aside.
"What the hell was that Tyler, do you want the federation to declare war on us?"
Tyler just looked at his brother "For being known as the brave your acting like quite the coward today."
"What has gotten into you Tyler?"
"What has gotten into me? What has gotten into you brother. After Grand Junction you did nothing, you didn't arrest Dmitri, you didn't apologize to the public, you didn't do anything, just like 11 years ago in that schoolhouse. You've always been weak, Deseret is weak, but I will make it strong."
Jack looked at his brother, speechless. "Tyler..."
Tyler walks out of the room. Pushing past Catherine on the way out.
Jake just sits down on a nearby chair. Catherine joined him.
"I never realized how much resentment he had for me. How can I fix this Cat, how can I be a good king one day when my own brother resents me."
"I don't think those were the words he meant to say Jack. Something seemed... off about Tyler during the speech, I don't know what happened to him in Cairo, but I don't think your brother is being completely honest with you."

Every new technology introduced to the nation of Deseret had the potential to change the nation in ways that were hard to predict.

It was for this reason that Max had sought out a special appointment to his department, a “cultural consultant” selected from the clergy, whose role was to identify potential pitfalls, so the technology could be introduced without falling foul of certain cultural sensitivities.

Pompeii was a quite man, polite, thoughtful and observant, he was everything a man of the church was supposed to be.

He certainly wasn’t dogmatic, and unless he could point to scripture that explicitly stated something was considered taboo, he was pretty liberal with his interpretation of the holy book.

Max had grown to like the man, who would often go to great lengths to speak privately with Max and not raise his concerns in front of others, which Max appreciated, even if he thought it unnecessary.

This unwillingness to speak openly to those in authority was something that seemed to be drilled into the people. Max wanted more people to butt-heads with him and offer resistance, but given his position, very few did.

There was only one who did, Joseph James, the son of a young nobleman, who had joined the department six-months in, and felt that Max was being too cautious, like a parent who refused to remove the stabilisers on a child’s bike.

Twice now, Max and Joseph had argued loudly in front of others, and some thought Joseph was still lucky to be in his job, but Max had no intention of firing him.

What no-one else in the department knew, was that Max had hired Joseph, with the understanding that he would be in visible opposition to Max.

Joseph was to present as an adversary within the department, so that anyone who did have genuine concerns about Max’s work would have a clear ally to turn to with their issues.

Joseph would then relay everything back to Max, and together they’d find the right solution.

The only other people to know of the arrangement were Prince Jack, who recommended Joseph to Max, and Max’s new wife August, with whom he increasingly shared almost everything, telling her that “a leader is only as strong as his opposition”.

It was a little deceptive, but proved highly effective in gathering the opinions of those around him who would otherwise have censored themselves, and it helped him do his job better too.

Joseph James was the son of the ambitious Kenneth James. A man who cares more about being in a position of power rather than actual political beliefs. When he saw that the foreign born Maximus Sohl was looking for a noble to advise him, he sent his more politically outspoken son Joseph to advise him, hoping that through Maximus house James could gain greater influence in court and potentially, closer relation with the king an prince in the hope of gaining the hand of one of the Taylor princesses for his son.

Pompii never knew his father who was claimed to be a militia man who died during a border dispute, and his mother had died after he was born. Pompii grew up an orphan for many years on the streets of Salt Lake before being given refuge at the royal cathedral. Pompii learned the ways of priesthood at the cathedral, though never fully agreed with all of the practices. Though through his time on the streets, he knew better than to make himself outspoken, else he make some nobleman angry. Pompii dutifully served as a priest for 30 years, gaining some power in the church before his superiors handed him to the Master of Technology Maximus White under the recognition of the king, a extremely high honor which he vowed to serve dutufully.

For the campaign of exspantion, the king sent the army under the leadership of his brother Robert, his son Jack, and the kingguard Benard Ironside.
