We're not a monarchy, but we'd be happy to foster one of the children in a family unit.

One option is the Sohl family. The Sohl's are a founding family of the Corporation. Typically bureaucrats, they are represented on the governing body and have strong ties to many other legacy-families in the Corporation.

Another option would be the Sacian family, who own a vast media empire that contains Frasta Entertainment Group and also has marriage ties to the Zwecklin family, who are prominant figures in the Janisist Faith and Baunari culture.

The Shelby family is another option which strong ties to the construction industries, or the Esmenna's are heavily involved in Healthcare and bio-engineering. All of these units would be able to offer a unique advantages in a caring and stable family environment, with a variety of new siblings with which to form ties and an education system focused on identifying and encouraging individual talents.

Let us know if you'd like to take us up on any of these offers. Families units are also available in South America, as well as on Mars.

As for marriage, well, that can be addressed further down the line when they come of age and need not necessarily be within the Corporation.

The kingdom would like to have an exchange with the Sohl family. To increase relations and the possibility of trade between the kingdom and the PCG. The kingdom would send Princess August, Daughter of Prince Robert, in exchange for one of the Sohl children to be warded. The Sohl child would be given a place at court in the royal palace and be treated with the same respect of that of a member of the noble class in the kingdom.

We're happy to accept and would be delighted to invite Princess August into the Sohl family.

The Sohl's are sending to you their 15 year old son, Maximus Sohl (though he may change that name when he fully comes of age, as is our custom). He's the great grandson of our current Managing Director (or VP) and is an outside-the-box thinker (he especially enjoys brainteasers and trick questions). He has aspirations of serving on the governing body one day and even at this young age, sees this as an exciting opportunity to study a new and developing nation up-close.

He's been gene-modded and spent plenty of time on Earth in South America during his youth, so he shouldn't have a problem adapting to the stronger gravity there. His height might surprise you at 6ft (but that's about average for a Martian his age, we normally grow about another foot-and-a-half by the time we're adults), and he might move quickly (we do well in a sprint, but not a marathon), but is also not as physically strong as you might expect for a lad of his size (again due to gravitational differences), but often finds inventive ways around this (he works smarter, rather than harder).

For us, family relationships are extremely important, so regular communication with genetic parents and siblings would be ongoing for both August and Maximus, even if we are a few million miles away on Mars, but while with you, Maximus will likely turn to our Ambassador for advice in personal matters (life-coach/therapist, is just one of the many functions Tellers perform in our culture).

Given the flashes of violence in your nation at present, we'd appreciate being able to send 3 bodyguards with him (2 for the day, 1 for nighttime), until the tensions have passed. They'll do their very best to go unnoticed.

Let me know a little about August, her likes, dislikes, hobbies, aspirations, etc. Maybe we can help her tap into and explore some of them in her time here.

The Kingdom sees no reason to deny the request of bodyguards, and wholeheartedly accepts them. Princess August is the thirteen-year-old daughter of Prince Robert. She is a quiet but intelligent, willful, and curious girl. Never having left Salt Lake City before, she is excited to go travel with the Sohl family. She is the average height of 5’2 but is frail, being thin and spending most of her time confined in bed reading. She is fiercely intelligent and adaptive to the new Knowledge of the outside world with the stories her cousin’s wife and the Master Teller has told her of Venus and the nations of earth and mars. She doesn’t quite understand the PCG and Sohl family as of yet, with the idea of capitalism, corporate merit, and gene modification being foreign concepts to her. August is eager to prove herself, with the strict patriarchal system of the kingdom preventing her from showing her fierce intellect, she will not be satisfied sitting idly by at her new home and will ask for things to do. She is very innovative, being the daughter of a second son of the kingdom, she has had more leeway to do her own thing. She hopes that one day, she can help her cousins change the kingdom of Deseret, removing the old doctrinal religious laws and transforming the kingdom into a more equal place for men and women.

One of the first things that struck August about Mars was how much smaller than Earth it was. She knew it was smaller, but seeing it loom half as large in the shuttlecraft window than her home world did, she suddenly felt a little nervous.

She knew the gravity here would be a lot easier on her and it almost certainly figured into her father’s thinking in having her sent here.

From orbit she could see the larger ocean in the north, from which Olympus Mons rose and the smaller Serene Sea a little further to the south. They appeared to be heading for a spot on the surface half-way between the two.

Passing through the atmosphere was nowhere near as turbulent as doing so on Earth, and once they dipped below the clouds she was met with a stunning view of the sprawling Founding Tree Rainforest, which must’ve been huge as even at this altitude it still extended way beyond the horizon.

As they reduced altitude further, she could see things sticking out above the canopy of green. It took her a few moments to realise what these were. Cities. These were the megalopolis’ of Phoenecian Mars, with populations in excess of 100m each.

She knew from her books that some had been overgrown by the rainforest and were now practically abandoned, like Berrynopolis, in Tigris Plannus - formerly the agricultural heartland of the Corporation, before the rainforest overtook the region and the city was abandoned along with the loss of traditional agriculture. Now they just cultivated food crops from the rainforest instead and grew the rest of their food inside hollowed-out asteroids.

They approached the region of Frasta, and the Corporations capital city of Selinopolis came into view. The closer to the surface she got, the more she realised that closer to the population centres, the rainforest was more orderly, and specialised crops grew in different areas.

She heard the pilot being given permission to land and stayed seated until they touched down. As soon as they had, she stood up and realised how different the gravity here really was, the speed at which she moved saw her feet leave the ground and her head nearly hit the roof of the shuttle, before she landed softly on her feet again.

She laughed to herself “this is going to take a bit of getting used to”.

---------------

She’d been greeted off the shuttle by Atrwys and Vardina. Atrwys was the family units Professional Parent - an important position in the unit, acting as the official representative in community and legal matters, among other things.

Vardina was Maximus own mother and as heartbroken as she must’ve been to see her little boy leave home, she greeted August with just as much warmth as if she was her own long-lost daughter.

On the ride there she was told about her new extended family - there were seven parents and four elders (grandparents) and she would be one of 10 children of varied ages (an older brother and sister, Lucas, 15, & Jen, 16; another sister the same age - Caroline, 13 - three younger brothers, 7, 8 & 10 years old, two toddler brothers, 5 & 4, and a infant girl, Isabelle, who is just six months old).

They followed a single track road through a valley a few miles away from the city centre. Eventually, the road opened out to reveal a river on one side and hills on the next. At the foot of the nearest hill was a small building. To her surprise, they stopped outside of it.

If this was her destination she was more than a little puzzled, but everyone exited the vehicle and motioned for her to follow them as they started walking toward the building.

She looked at the outside of her new home and wasn’t sure what to think. She didn’t want to appear rude, but it was very small. It looked like a quaint little cottage, set in front of a small hill. On the sides of the hill, some kind of root vegetables grew in mini allotments, fed by a incredibly simple irrigation system that made use of natural rainfall.

There was no way more than a handful of people could live in a building that small, but they’d probably never go hungry. It wasn’t until she took her first steps inside that she understood what she’d been looking at.

The smaller structure at the front was basically just an entrance. The hill itself was the actual house and it went down many levels, as well as up. They’d built the house and covered it with an earth mound on which they grew their own food crops.

Ceiling were higher, but then so was everyone else. And so were quite a few of the shelves. She wondered how she’d ever be able to reach something on one of the higher shelves, then she remembered standing up on the shuttle and nearly hitting her head on the ceiling. She realised a little jump would give her a lot more elevation here and her landing would likely be softer too.

Though there were no visible windows, or lighting, the rooms were well lit. She asked why it wasn’t dark inside, at which point, Atrwys placed his hand on one of the gemstones high on the wall and half the room fell into shadow. On the other side of the room, Vardina did the same and, the whole room went dark, the light returning instantly as they removed their hands.

“We bounce natural light through the house from outside, using gemstones and reflective metals built into the architecture, and the lighting in each room changes according to the time of day”, explained Vardina.

It was ingenious, August thought to herself. Then she had another thought… “What about at night?”

Atrwys laughed out loud, “At night?”, he walked over to a different wall, “we cheat”, he said, as he touched a panel which lit the room up again, from slits in the ceiling.

Re: Kingdom of Deseret Royal Family

As Maximus Sohl’s ship comes into view of Salt Lake City he is reminded shockingly of how ordinary it looks. Salt Lake lied in a mountain valley with the Wasatch Mountains to the east and north. The Oquirrh Mountains border the western edge of the valley. He remember reading in the novel he bought before his flight to prepare for his mission that the city is situated on land once covered by the prehistoric Lake Bonneville. Salt Lake's official elevation is 4,330 feet/1,320 meters above sea level. The land around it was sandy, without the rain forest of Mars he had grown so use to. This place was nothing like the city of Selinopolis he grew up in. What stuck out to him the most about the city was the palace. The palace stood in the north east corner of the city, where the old state capital building stood thousands of years ago when this land was known as “The United States of America”. The palace was a huge castle that stood out in contrast to the 22nd century look of the city around it. The castle looked as if it came straight out of the medieval period. The castle also looked like it took influence from Windsor Castle in the city of London as he read about in his history of western nobility. The city and the palace had a bluish tint to them indicating a force field was implemented, though a rather outdated one compared to the ones on mars. The city looked as it was in a perpetual state of war, with sandbags and barbed wires on the street. Though according to the records there hadn’t been any war in this region for some time, minus the civil war that had just broken out, but the violence wasn’t anywhere near this settlement.
As the ship went closer to the city, he could see how many people there were in this town. It seemed that the maps from his novel of the city from hundreds of years ago were completely wrong, the city looked like it has grown five-fold with his estimates putting the city at a million people, with skyscrapers build where townhouses use to be. As the ship lands in front of the palace a great crowd of thousands gathers around. The people looked straight out of a medieval movie he had watched as a child, with the men wearing long shirts and pants, the collars and wrists covered, even in the heat of summer. All the men wore colors of brown, grey, and white. Maximus noticed however that there wasn’t a woman in site. As Maximus stepped out of the ship, he almost fell, noticing how heavy the gravity of the planet was. He had trained for this of course in gravity chambers, but the real thing was a bit different. The smell of coal and wood burning was in the air. Maximus had read somewhere in a book that “live in this era that has benefited from the Industrial Revolution, and we live with a kind of luxury and plenty that even all but the poorest of live with a kind of sensuousness that was unimagined by medieval kings.” But by the looks of the wealth of the palace these people were not as medieval as was imagined by his sources. The castle had a whole wing for vehicles the size of a football field, a armory the size of an mansion on mars, and just by the window count he could tell the palace had over 200 rooms. It looked more like a factory and a station and mansion mixed together due to the sheer size than a place were people live.
“Make way for the crown prince” a burly man shouts, as the see of onlooker’s parts, a revenue of 50 people in purple and golden garbs approach, most of these men are surrounded by militia men in enhanced Kevlar body armor suits with assault laser riffles at their arm. At the front of the revenue, a teen boy on a pure white horse dressed in purple silks and khaki trousers approach him the boy had a giant clock of white fur and purple silk covered in fleur-de-lis and a golden crown covered in rubies. A pin in the shape of the Taylor sun and sword was on his right breastplate. As he approached the people kneeled around him. “good day Maximus of the house Soh of the nation of the Phoenix Corporate Group. I am Prince Jack of the house Taylor, heir apparent to the throne, and regent for my father the good king Bryan Taylor, guardian of the Mormon people, king of Desseret, the reformer. Please if you would join me at court, we have much to discuss.”

August wasn’t use to the life of the Phoenix Corporate Group family units, though in her culture she would call it a peasant’s life. The palaces she grew up in had room 10 times the side of the entire cottage she was in now. She also wasn’t use to doing everyday tasks herself such as cleaning her room and washing her own clothing, those were for “people beneath you” as her aunt Georgina White use to tell her. Though in her own way, she loved this life. The air smelled so clean, and the towns folk were so friendly towards her. What she enjoyed most about her new home however, was her treatment. Here, she was treated as just one of the children by Atrwys and Vardina, instead of a sickly princess. She was given the autonomy to go outside and play in the gardens with the other children instead of being confined to her room and attending mass every week. Most importantly however for August, is that she was treated as an equal to her adoptive brothers. While they were all lowborn, the parents treated them all the same. They even allowed her to attend the same lessons as boys in the village, at a real school too. Something she wasn’t allowed to do back at the kingdom. She was out in the gardens talking about the the recent book she read called “The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money” to Caroline and Jen when suddenly Vardina stepped out of the hut and toward the girls. “August can you come inside for a moment.” August liked that the family called her only by first name, but she could see something was wrong by the saddened look in Vardina’s eyes. “Coming” she said leaving her two sisters with a puzzled look. As she entered the hut, the family unit mother told her to sit down. She did as asked. “We received a message from your father, Robert.” August’s face lit up with glee, but also concern. she hadn’t heard from her father in weeks, since he said he was going on campaign against her uncle Marcus. She thought the whole affair awfully sad. Her uncle had always been scared of outsiders, but now he was taking it a bit far. Catherine was a nice girl if not a bit strange, and she and her cousin Tyler were excited to go abroad. But then…. Her uncle stabbed and almost killed the king… she didn’t like to think about what was going on back home. She opened the hologram that her uncle had recorded. “To Princess August of the House Taylor daughter of Prince Robert of the House Taylor, brother to King Bryan of the House Taylor. Hey August… its your father…. Something, happened on the campaign. While we were marching towards Grand Junction to capture your uncle, Emperor Dmitri… he (looks away from camera) its all gone now. The city is a ruin. All those men, women, children are gone. He used an atom bomb on us August… their all gone now.” The recording ended. August slumped down into her chair, she couldn’t believe it. This was not how Deseret fought wars. How could all those men be… then she thought of her aunt a zealous prejudice woman no doubt, but always made sure August had the support she needed, hiring the best priests to heal her, and her cousin… little Carlos. He had just turned 5 this year, she uses to cattle him in her arms when no one was looking. Such a good child, never once did he cry or act out. They were all gone now. She sat there, slowly starting to cry as Vardina held her in her arms.

Maximus thought he’d never get use to life at court. The room he was given was larger than the house he grew up in. And there was so much wealth around. He was given fine silks to wear and had servants that did everything for him from making his bed to bringing his food. Other than walking around the palace he didn’t know what to do half of the time. This was made even more difficult by the fact that he found it impossible to sleep at night after Grand Junction. Of course, he knew what an atomic bomb was and the devastation it would cost, but to see the thing up-close take a city and its inhabitance off the map, it horrified him. The moonlight crept into the room as Max laid awake in bed. Maximus was sick that he couldn’t do anything about it, he was given a place in the palace and given more luxuries then he ever imagined, but he lacked purpose. He could only talk to the same servants so many times, and writing in his journal about the history and culture of Deseret was starting to eat at him. This kingdom was so backwards, the women weren’t allowed to travel after dark, attend school, or hold public office. And the Nepotism of the country, he couldn’t believe some of the idiots who got jobs in this palace just because their great-great grandfather did something special. In the corporate things were different, a person earned their position, they weren’t simply handed it. This nation could develop so much quicker if it just employed the right people. Then Max thought of a plan. Who better to develop this country then someone who’s lived their life in a place where things were better? It would be the perfect chance to prove his usefulness to his grandfather, that one day he could inherent the corporation. The only problem was how was he supposed to get the position. He thought that he should plead his case to prince Jack. Prince jack and Max had spent a good amount of time together since his arrival, though mainly because none of the other nobles would speak to him. They wouldn’t be rude to him, but he could tell they weren’t happy about his presence. Perhaps they were to afraid to say anything however after what happened at Grand Junction. The prince thought that he would listen to him. He exited his room and started to walk towards jacks’ room, he told his guards to stay behind as he thought he wouldn’t be needing them, as he approached Bernard Ironside was Infront of the door. He found the lord commander a dutiful man, but stoic, and not great for conversation. “I would like to speak to the prince.” “The prince is asleep, come back in the morning” “please, it’s important that I speak with him.” Ironside looked as if he wasn’t going to budge, but then the door opened and out stepped Prince jack. Jack was dressed in his purple silken pajamas, and he could see that in the room Catherine was no where to be found. “Its alight Ironside, let him in.” “as you command your grace” Ironside bows and steps away from the door. Max walked in and sat at the little table next to the bed, Jack took the other chair and sat down as well. “how can I help you friend” jack said smiling, though his eyes still seemed hollow. “let me on the small council, I could help” Max stated. Jack frowned sadly “you know I can’t do that Max; the kingdom is already fragile. The civil war may be over, but people still are fearful of foreign influence, you’re not even a noble. The war was started because I married Catherine and if you were put on the council it might start another”. Max protested “the kingdom for too long has been run by men who don’t deserve to advice it. If we put people in charge who know what they’re doing instead of who has the right name, this this nation can change for the better, something like Grand Junction would never happen again.” The door creaked open, out stepped Catherine in an orange and blue nightgown, her short yellow hair at her side. “Husband, I see you brought a guest.” Jack looked away from her and Catherine frowned. “Jack, you have to speak with me eventually, were husband and wife remember.” Jack didn’t respond. “You should let him on the counsel” Jack and Max looked at Catherine. “it would be for the good of the nation, you took a risk on me, why wouldn’t you do the same for your people.” Jacks looked over at his wife, and with no emotion said “marrying you murdered millions.” Catherine slapped jack right in the face. “how dare you.” She then left the room. Jack sadly looked at the floor, “maybe Marcus was right, look at what has happened because of my stupid actions.” Max shook his head “Jack, you can’t put what happen at Grand Junction on yourself, it was Dmitri’s decision and his alone. You should blame yourself, or Catherine for what happened. You’re the prince Jack, people need you to be their pillar of strength right now, you can’t let what happened define you.” Jack looked up at Max “you’re right Max, I’ve been a fool.” Jack stands up. “ill talk to my father in the morning about putting you on the council. We needed a person to fulfill the new role of master of technology anyway. Now if you excuse me, I need to apologies to my wife” he says as he runs out the door. Max sits their and smiles.

Re: Kingdom of Deseret Royal Family

Postby jonisilk » 27 Aug 2019, 17:50

It was the middle of the day. Almost everyone else was out, most of them at the Stadia listen to speakers, learning crafts or playing games, but August stayed home again, as did Vardina, though she spent most of her time in the kitchen - which August had discovered was pretty much the heart of the Martian home - leaving August to read in her room.

August found it difficult to be around the younger children, especially the two youngest boys the same age as her cousin was.... was. That word is what made it so difficult. She loved little Carlos so much. It had been weeks now, but the hole inside her still hurt like nothing she'd ever experienced before.

She'd become reclusive again. Not going out to play, but confining herself to bed and devouring book after book. She read them, but in truth she was going through the motions. The words on the page weren't registering anymore and she realised she couldn't remember half of what she'd read that day. She decided to get up and do... something.

Wandering through the house, she realised that she could hear Vardina in the kitchen, clearly agitated as she spoke to someone. She didn't recognise the other voice, but he was a lot calmer, not that that seemed to matter as Vardina wa nearly hysterical.

Moving quietly she crept closer to the kitchen - about halfway down the hall - until she could hear what was being said clearly.

V - But he’s only 15! Who gives a teenage boy that kind of power and influence?!

G - It’s just like that boy to fall down in shit and come out smelling of roses. He’s obviously a quick study if he can manage to create a role for himself in government.

V - And what happens if he screws it up?

G - Knowing Max, he hasn’t even considered failing as a possibility, reminds me of someone else I used to know.

V - Dad, stop brushing this off. That was different, this is serious!

G - Dina, I’m not brushing anything off. Granted, no-one expected anything like this, but he’s obviously managed to endear himself to the royal family, and he’s given the Corporation a strong foundation on which to build a lasting relationship with them.

V - But he’s still a child, he’s not mature enough, and how will he handle the pressure?

G - You can rest assured, the governing body and I will be doing everything we can to aid him in his new role. We won’t let him fail.

V - Promise me… promise me, Dad.

G - I promise…. now what about August, how is she?

V - She was doing so well, she was happy, full of life, then she got that message. She’s been… different ever since.

G - She’ll need some time to process and work through things.

V - She doesn’t want to speak with her father. Won’t even open his messages, but she is talking with the rest of her family, so that’s something. Mostly she just stays in bed, reading. We’re looking to have her sit down with a Teller for a chat and see if they might be able to help her.

G - Why don’t I speak with Darius. I could have him come round to visit her. If you’re going to have her speak to a Teller, it might as well be the governing body’s Honoured Council. She is a princess after all.

V - That would be fantastic, thank you Dad.

G - He’s back from his tour the day after tomorrow, I’ll speak to him then. In the meantime, tell Atrwys that the Sacian’s are hosting a gathering next week and you’re all invited.

V - All of us? The whole family?

G - All of you, especially August. Daniel says ZiZi is dying to meet her.

The enemies of my enemies are not necessarily my friend, but they may still be useful.
