Coming of Age in the Empire of Venus

High school finishes around the time a Venusian is eighteen, but before they go into their university education or later careers, they're required to go through militia training. The Venusian militia is different than many other national militias in that it does not prepare to fight a conventional war, which on Venus is left solely to the Armada, but instead is centered on fighting an effective guerilla campaign. As militiamen, they're given a rifle, a cuttlefish leather uniform, and several smaller items, like shovels.

The culmination of the summer is the Unification Day Ball, the most important event in a young Venusian's life. For it is there that they meet their future spouse, carefully selected by the State Security Commissariat, based on the Lawful Good protocols, to guarantee lifelong happiness. In preparation for this, each unit is comprised of future couples - although none of those involved know exactly which of their comrades they'll marry. This is all perfectly normal to the Venusian people, who met their spouses in similar fashion, but the profit-minded Subus Corp has acquired the rights to broadcast a unit's activities, game-show format, to offworlders who think this is incredibly exotic and interesting.

The Venusian people generally regard this as one of the benefits of their civilizational model. Guaranteed happiness, at the cost of some illusory freedom. If everyone has a soulmate, who wouldn't accept some help finding them?

The Venusian Church also approves. The highly conservative religious group disapproves of sex before marriage, and the remarkably early marriages of Venusian youth drastically cuts down on premarital sex, as does the knowledge that your soulmate is just a couple years away.

Popular Culture

The culture of the Venusian Empire is shaped primarily by its relative isolation from the outside world, but some cultural imports have become wildly popular among the population. The foremost of these is tankery, the combat-based Aresian game which has become the national sport on Venus. The Venusian league is a true rival to Aresian dominance of the sport, and the game provides an instant topic of conversation for a Venusian whenever they meet an Aresian. Without different cultures or religions on a planet, tankery team rivalries take on a whole new significance. The SSC would never even consider pairing up an Astarte Imperials fan with a San Juan Rabbit-Killer. The rivalry, dating back centuries, is considered to be one of the main reasons that Astarte and San Juan declared for different sides at the start of the civil war.

Film, theater, and television are all also quite popular in the empire. Baunairi imports, due to the close ties between the two nations, have a significant following, although domestic products are still generally more popular. The main theaters are located in Astarte, and the majority of film and television production is in New Amman. Folk music remains popular throughout the country, but the main center of music production is in Buenos Aries. The most distinctive feature of Venusian culture as a whole though, is the propagandistic bent that many cultural objects are imbued with.

For example, a popular series of childrens’ books, analagous to the Hardy Boys on Old Earth, called the Belgrana Girls, has been criticized by certain offworlders as being overtly anti-Mattopian. The series follows a set of three sisters – Millie, Stacy, and Nat (fairly clearly representative of the militia, SSC, and knights, respectively), who live abroad in a horrifically poorly stereotyped version of Mattopia. The three girls catch criminals (well, the worst of them, all Mattopians are portrayed generally poorly) and foil their evil but incompetent communist plots to the acclaim of their parents and the Venusian people as a whole.

Why would three Venusian girls be living in attopia?

It's unclear from the story, there's no real emphasis on what the parents do.

Maybe they were all kidnapped, and escaped using their wiles?

^New explanation. I realized they couldn't be diplomat's kids (we don't recognize each other), or businessmen (that didn't go so well last time) so I was at a loss.

They were kidnapped to be ground up and turned into missiles to kill other Venusian kids?

No, to be put in a factory where they're forced to lay eggs for the corrupt Mattopian leaders to eat.

Friends/family of Alexandra in Pacifica...Arjun would have business interests in Mattopia, or at least with imports from Mattopia and he'd definitely be involved with diplomacy.

They'd be businessmen/diplomats and be Venusian, but they'd be expats though
