CYOC Main Thread- LOOK HERE FIRST

Postby Zander » 23 Oct 2011, 21:23

Welcome to CYOC!
Rules
We only have one rule here: the common sense rule. Every action you take needs to make sense. You can't have benefits without drawbacks, and your country must develop in a reasonable fashion.

In war, the common sense rule is hard to apply by either of the two warring parties. As such the common sense rule is applied by a neutral third party, nominated by both parties.

The BoSS has been established to handle rules disputes. Basically, everybody takes a vote. You may want to look over there before making a country to see other rules.

Creating your own country
Step One: Get an idea!
In CYOC, every country is based on an idea. We have everything from massive paranoid super powers, to nomads hoarding vast stockpiles of nukes, to a single guy living in a shack with a couple of hillbillies. Create something that reflects you!

Step 2: Find some land
Reference the maps below. Find some unused land, and grab it for your new nation! Remember to grab a reasonable amount of land. Every country starts small. Also remember, all land is not created equal. The NVC, for instance, is large, but it is mostly icy tundra, while a country positioned in the American West might be smaller in area, but contain some of the richest agricultural lands in the world.

It is advisable to check out who your neighbors are going to be.
If you can't find land on Earth, look to the green and blue Mars - or even Venus!

Step 3: Draw up some stats
You can go as in depth or as general with your stats as you would like. It is best to draw up a population, some imports and exports, a bit of history, etc. Remember to make the stats reflect what type of country you want. A brutal dictatorship is probably going to have a pretty large military, but a low approval rating. A communist utopia, a somewhat ineffective population, but with little chance of revolt. A super industrialized society is going to have a great industrial output, but an oppressed and occasionally uppity lower class. Etc, etc.

Step 4: Pick 2 boons
When starting the game, all new countries can choose 2 of the following boons

Populous - Your nation is heavily populated. Its maximum starting population is 100 million (up from 50 million)
Advanced - Your nation is advanced technologically. You start with an additional 3 researched technologies.
Tributary - Your nation begins with a vassal state. Choose the starting area for this vassal, and it has a maximum starting population of 15 million.
Explore the Stars - Your nation has traveled through the solar system and beyond. You begin with a colony - either within the solar system (eg: on the moon, Mars, an asteroid, etc), or in another system.
Conquer the Stars - Your nation has focused on space, but for its military applications. You begin with a small fleet of space warships, and more advanced designs.
Genemodders - Your nation is advanced in biological modding. You start with more advanced modding capabilities, and all of your people may start off modified.
Cyborgs - Your people have augmented themselves technologically. You start with advanced cybernetic technology, and all of your people may start off as cyborgs.
Wealthy - Your nation is very prosperous. Your per capita GDP may start off at up to 80,000 (up from ~40-45,000)
Defensive - Your nation is a fortress. You start with a dense network of defenses in your initial land.
Industrialized - Your nation begins heavily industrialized, with a strong manufacturing capability.
Militia - Your entire nation trains in its defense. You begin with 20% of your population as trained militia, able to be used in defensive wars on your territory.
Locally Important - Your nation is a center of importance in its region - be it culturally, economically, or religiously. A chosen non-player area around you have factions within them supporting you.
Deep Dwellers - Your nation has developed the technology to excavate and build underground. You may start with any amount of your population living in those underground cities.
Water Cities - Your nation has long lived on, or below the waves. You begin with vast water cities (either floating, or underwater), and the technology to produce more.
Deterrent - Your nation begins with a small stockpile of nuclear or antimatter weapons. (Warning - use of such weaponry will be viewed *very* negatively by other players!)

Remember the common sense rule! There are a lot of things you probably would like, but can't have. These are your countries goals. Work towards them through diplomacy, trade, and science.

Here is a handy dandy template for this stage:
Country name:
First land:
Capital City:
Government type:
Starting Population (50 million or less):
Information on size of Military(max 10% of pop):
Starting technologies:
Some advantages your civ holds:
Some disadvantages your civ must deal with:
Anything else:

Note that this template is just a guideline! You may go as in-depth as you want! Many countries have long and rich histories, descriptions of cities, military organizations, political structures, and more, so feel free to look around!

Step 4: Interact!
Open diplomatic channels, start trade, announce projects. Your country is ready to take on the world!

Important Threads:
The BoSS- Determines the rules of CYOC
Science/Technology- For posting of projects and scientific development
Land Claims- For posting of land claims and the like
International Market- For trading and other such things.
Index of Public Technologies - technologies all players have access to

Other Tips
If you're not sure about what to do, ask! Everyone here is always willing to help!
Try to have an idea of some of the directions you want to steer your nation - whether that be technology, government, or something else. Building towards a goal makes everything else fall into place.
Joint projects are a good way to get new technology and allies.

Intro
Hello, and welcome to the fantastic world of CYOC! Create your own country is a rather simple game played on a forum such as this one. In CYOC, you create your own nation and interact with other nations. It is essentially a role-play on the scale of a society, rather then a specific character.

Everyone is welcome to join.

(Juussttt FYI, I have removed the 1 million starting pop limit. We actually removed this a while ago, but WIM never updated the main thread. Remember, BE REASONABLE with starting pop. This is not the current earth, calamities reduced the population to only a few million, and the nations are just 300 or so years from recovery.)

Yup

Interested in rejoining?

Duc is still around. He posted when I first started talking about reviving. He said, and I quote:
