Oh FGS, don't change it. It doesn't matter! It's a game. We're not deciding imperial ownership here.

I do understand the history argument, though. Circa 1840, the islands were possessed by Britain and likely would have been using the English name for them.

I'm unlikely to make any sweeping change, but putting "(Falklands)" on the map below Malvinas would be a low-effort, low-risk change.

I was on a Dip forum once where a couple of Turks went ballistic over Constantinople not being named Istanbul. I responded with some shamelessly derivative song lyrics (see below) and got scolded by a moderator. LOL

Istanbul was once Byzantium
Istanbul's no longer Byzantium
Been long long gone, no more Byzantium
Now its Meze by the Bosporus all day long

All the gals out by Byzantium
Live in Istanbul, and not in Byzantium
So if you've a hot date in Byzantium
She'll be just as hot in Istanbul

Even Nova Roma was once Byzantium
Why Constantine changed it I can't say
Maybe he liked it better that way

So take me back to old Byzantium
No, you can't go back to old Byzantium
Been long long gone, no more Byzantium
And why did Byzantium get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Stamboul!
Constantinople!

And crowd the map. There's no need at all to rename anything, and no need to appease any imperial preference by causing confusion and adding an alternative name.

To be fair, both "Falklands" and "Malvinas" are names from imperialist colonizers. I'm not looking to appease the "imperial" preference here so much as to improve the historicity of the map in a very low-risk manner.

That part of the map isn't nearly as crowded as others. If we were talking about a space in the northeast of North America, for instance, adding a parenthetical would be out of the question. But with the parenthetical in place, it's not vastly different in size from the names of several other locales on the board.

The update is already starting to show up, and I think it looks pretty reasonable.

I won't be doing any programmatic renaming though. The space will remain simply "Malvinas" in everywhere it shows up in plain text.

I don't think anyone should get too upset about historical accuracy. There looks like a canal in Panama on this map and I bet no-one asks for that to be removed for historical accuracy. :D

As the palindrome says, the canal, and Panama came in to being around Teddy Roosevelt's time didn't it?

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!
