Should we know if any orders have been entered

Postby dib » 25 Jul 2019, 20:00

Shoot me down if this has been considered before:

It occured to me that in A Face To Face you would know if someone had left and hence country in civil disorder. (THEY WENT HOME :geek: )

Or you may know if a user HAS entered orders (or at least a bit of paper went INTO the HAT).

Would it be worth considering also knowing if sometone has entered orders in the online version.

It may be a lot of work to implement I guess but in an ideal world do people think its a good idea?

Benefit:

It would have a benefit that all players may be able to take a percentile guess if someone is going to NMR or not

On Webdip, in games that are non-anonymous, this is the case. However, there is also the possibility of nmrs in face to face. E.g. One example quoted to me somewhere, where some individual at a face to face put in a piece of paper, which turned out to be blank, and then swore blind he thought he had put in orders. It can be used as a diversion, i.e. Deliberate nmr, but with one hold move or something like.

Maybe orders entered, but IMO I wouldn't show status of finalized versus not-finalized, like webdip does.

Even entering orders though for all of us who enter provisional orders could be a “see you made up your mind” even without finalizing

I agree with asu. I don't necessarily want someone to know if I've entered some orders because I tend to enter provisionals and then start the diplomacy.

The problem is, at least for me, in a movement phase, I prefer to use the whole of the deadline unless I don't need to negotiate. That's down to me having a limited time to access the site during a day.

And I can see the Pussycats who want faster games being ever more intolerant of people who can't finalise early. (Having said that, in the games I've played, probably due to the deadlines I play, this isn't a major problem.)

I just think it would be closer to the FTF experience.

Agree it shouldn't say whether they are finalised or not.

It would be up to a competent player to understand that just because someone has submitted orders doesn't mean they can't be changed.

And I agree about not showing finalized status.

I don't really mind either way, but one additional point re finalising. Finalised orders can be changed as well.

Some players intentionally enter a Hold order for their forces and go radio silent to some or all players. Ultimately, they are intentionally appearing to have NMR'ed without having done so. Some or all players wonder if they will be surrendering soon. This strategy has debatable value but it is used on occasion. With the change recommended, it would no longer be an option. II don't think we should limit player options.
