Have your say - Notifications

Postby super_dipsy » 14 Nov 2018, 08:13

We are considering adding notifications to Playdip. In simple terms, you can obviously opt out/in etc, but we plan to offer notifications for various events such as a game starting or something. The notification will open in your browser or on your phone as normal for other sites you get notifications from.

The purpose of this thread is to get your input on if you would be interested in notifications and where you think such notifications might be useful. Again, remember you wont get any for an event you do not opt in to, or indeed any at all if you opt out altogether. But if you could have notifications for something, what would it be?

My own starter list is:

- when a game (particularly a Live one) goes into confirmation?
- an hour before a deadline if you have submitted no orders?
These three are already available in an 'email me' form, but maybe notify is preferable
- when you get a message ?
- when there is a post in the PP?
- when a phase is processed ?

It may be that having a notification every time you get a message is too much, particularly if you are playing in lots of games. I should make it clear that the opt in/out would not be on a game by game basis though; any event you opt in for would notify you for that event in all games you are in.

That’s very dependent on the form of notification.

Flag / colour on tabs?
Audio?
Pop-up banner somewhere on the window?
Pop-up window / dialog box?

The latter form is a huge no-no from me. They are inefficient at best and mostly intrusive.

More subtle notifications would be very welcome.
You already colour things for pending games etc.
Adding a tab notification (like “app symbols” on iOS) would be cool.
A sliding or pop-up (possibly temporary) banner would also be a good addition, I think.

Standard browser notification format, eg something like this (with our Playdip logo and our content of course)

But of course you do not have to receive them, you can choose to opt out in which case you wont get them.

I was a solid "no" on whether I'd be interested in receiving PlayDip notifications. Until I read this:

To which I say, "yes! yes! yes!". That would be awesome.

Negative on notifications unless there is an opt-out, or better yet that one would have to proactively sign-up for notifications.

I am definitely pro-notifications, and for anyone worried about it, you'd have to make a choice to opt in or out regardless.

I can't think of a browser or OS that would allow a website to turn on notifications without permission from the user.

I do not *need* the notifications myself and would likely opt-out. (I get far too much email as it is.) However, I love the idea of the site having a reminder system for folks who think they might be prone to missing deadlines. As far as I am concerned, anything that does not affect game play and decreases NRM's is a real plus.

Have a simple checkbox on our profiles:
I would like to receive notifications via email (or text?) When:
__ A deadline is approaching and I have not submitted orders.
__ I have received new press in one of my games.
__ A turn has processed.
__ A new games is starting.
__ An administrative action has occurred in a game.

And if we do NMR, could we get a notification that makes some type of obnoxious fart noise?
