The Original Suggestion wrote:Just a small browser extension that'll notify me when (in order of priority):
  • the phase ends / begins
  • i have new (unread) in-game messages
  • i have new (unread) public press
  • someone proposes a draw
  • someone surrenders

I use google chrome so obviously I'd like to see it in a chrome extension, but obviously it'd be good to have on all browsers.

This would be great so that I don't have to keep going back to the game to check if I've got anything to do or not because my browser will keep me notified, it would help people to be more prompt with responding to everything!

That takes you through making a chrome extension. I may fiddle around once school gets out next week.

I did a very basic one last night:

You click the icon on the top right, and it gives you a popup box with the information.
All it does is fetches the "member_box" div on the home page when you're logged in and displays it in the popup without you ever having to go to http://www.playdiplomacy.com

I am by no means a professional, I have never done a chrome extension before, but I do a lot of web design, so HTML & CSS are no problem for me, and Javascript isn't too hard for me either.

I have used no insecure methods, the only problem with it is that you have to already be logged in.

If people think it's a worth while feature, I will keep learning and keep going.

Things I'd like to add to it:
  • Settings page where you can supply your username and password, then the extension will check if you're logged in, and if you're not, it will log you in.
  • Actual notification of these things occurring, so you don't even have to check, it just pops up when something happens.

-Have I got any clue how to do either of those? No.
-Do I really have time to look into it? No.
-Will I look into it anyway? Yes.
-Will it be ready anytime soon? I doubt it.

Thanks,
Penguin.

Update: I have no added a way to check if you are logged in or not, I could not work out how to do it with cookies on PlayDiplomacy since it looks as though it doesn't have a "logged in" cookie, it must be comparing a Session ID cookie to some PHP session ID to work out if you're logged in or not, which I cannot replicate, so I've simply searched the page for wether it is displaying "Log In" or "Log Out" on the home page. I'm sure this is a bit slower than some other methods, but my aim is just to whip it out as quickly as possible, then someone with more time and expertise can check over it & improve it.

Currently if you're logged out, it just links to the log in page, but I'll work on adding settings later.

Update #2:

Added the login feature. If you're not logged in, it will display a login form and then it will show you the details. At this form you can tick "remember me" box or not tick it, and that will mean next time, it will input your details for you, but you still have to click Login.

There is an options page so you can change the saved username and password and/or delete them from memory.

Update #3:
Google Chrome users only.

Anybody willing to download, and test my Beta: http://www.jdcreative.me.uk/portfolio/web/ce-playdip/

The information I'm looking for is primarily, are there any bugs/does anything need fixing? Secondarily, I'd like to here your thoughts on additional features?

Thanks,

Re: [IN PROGRESS] Browser extensions

Postby Zack L1ghtman » 23 May 2013, 13:12

UPDATE.

Development will resume on the 1st of June.

Okay, thank you to all who have tested and given me feedback, I have heard of no bugs to note.
I will look at getting it on the google web store at some point.

Here's what the suggestions have been so far:
1) Add some forum capabilities:
a) Check for unread PM's.
b) Add a couple of threads to watch for new posts.
2) Rather than have the overview information (what it gives now), give game specific information.
So instead of:
You need to fill in orders: NO
You need to finalize orders: NO
You have unread messages: NO
You have unread shoutboxes: NO
You need to confirm pending games: NO
Current active games: 2
Time until next game deadline: 3h:6m

You'd have something like:
You need to confirm pending games: NO
Current active games: 2

Game Title
Deadline: 3h:6m
Orders required: NO
Orders need finalizing: NO
Unread messages: NO
Unread Public Press: NO

Game Title
Deadline: 12h:17m
Orders required: NO
Orders need finalizing: NO
Unread messages: NO
Unread Public Press: NO

People's thought's on these additions/changes?

Adding the game specific information could get quite cluttered - so I'm looking at ways to keep it uncluttered.
Maybe using a more info button, after the overview.
OR, just doing the overview, then if any of them say YES, for example unread messages, then it can list all the games you have unread messages in underneath.
