last time I checked, demonstrating an iota of courage, showing any outward sign whatsoever that one knows how to advance against opposition, taking a chance here or there to grow, to expand, to better one's lot hardly constitutes "throwing" the game. Those displays of competitive gumption constitute "playing" the game, and are nearly always prerequisites to winning.

edit: for an excellent example of what a winning spirit looks like, see attitudes. No matter how backed to the wall he is, he is always looking for an avenue to fight. Oh, yeah, and he also communicates - even with enemies. Because, well, you know, the game being called "diplomacy" and all

edit: honorable mention to ghostecho. Although he seems to have lost his nerve of late, its only because he burned too bright too fast - he attacked 3 different nations in the first 4-5 seasons trying to find his winning path
