Two Player Challenge!

Postby super_dipsy » 28 Dec 2017, 10:30

Playdip's Two Player Challenge is a game for two player, and can be played on all maps other than Versailles. 2pc games follow normal Diplomacy rules but with some important differences.
- There are only two countries, and they are always Select countries (so one player chooses attacker and the other defender)
- Each starts with its normal unit allocations, the other countries just do not exist
- In 2pc games one country is specified by the game creator as the Attacker and the other as the Defender
- No 2pc game lasts beyond the 12th year - so for example, in Standard games this means the end of 1912
- If either player reaches 18 SCs before then, they win (with one exception)
- There are no Surrender/Replacements. Instead, Surrender becomes Concede, immediately finishing the game with a win to the other country
- If noone reaches 18, the Defender wins
- The exception to the 18 SC victory condition is if both countries reach 18 centres in the same Build phase (including the last one), in which case the Attacker wins

This game is modeled on Diplomacy lore that generally considers France defending from Austria as a good balance due to their locations. However the Playdip version does not restrict people from playing whatever combination they want. Mind you, you should probably think very carefully about playing England in a challenge ;) (unless you are on the 1900 map, which might change things quite a bit!)

In the end, it's just supposed to be fun :D . Having said that, since 2pc games always have a result in a fixed time, it makes it quite suitable for some sort of 2pc tournament (probably just for AvF or something).

Probably goes without saying, but 2pc games are Friends games. However they do NOT need a password.

Nice. Thanks Dipsy.
Can it be played as live game, too?

When I try and search for 2p challenge games ("join games" -> 2p challenge at "yes") I get error message

Unknown column 'twopc' in 'where clause'

http://www.playdiplomacy.com/games.php? ... tus_game=0

Edit: I get the same error message when I try to create a 2p challenge game

I forgot I changed the name of the column in the database. I hope it should be OK now.

One thing that's minor: it asks you for your preference in countries, even if "random countries" is selected as a game setting.

But yes it's working thanks :)

Ah, sorry, if that is not clear in the doc I will make it so. Two Player Challenge games force to Select Country because you shouldn't be joining not knowing if you are the attacker or defender.

I think I’d like to eventually see the option to rank these but that may be down the road.
