The Stuff Happens variant can be applied to any of the main variants, similar to the Fog of War variant, and is a Premium Only option. Stuff Happens provides a variant that follows the normal diplomacy rules in general, but in which unexpected incidents may happen. The idea is hat these incidents will not happen all the time, but will offer specific challenges as the game proceeds. Some of the incidents are minor, while others are major; but rather than describing the possibilities, it is left to the players to encounter them as they come up. This allows new incident types to be added over time, and hopefully provides a little more more intrigue.
Stuff Happens games are played as normal, but there is one visible addition - a new source of messages in the game message interface. Under the list of message folders for the other countries, there is an extra one labelled 'Intelligence'. This will light up as usual when you receive an intelligence report, and is accessed in the normal way. These messages will provide information regarding incidents that happen, but unlike other message folders there will be no option to Reply or Forward them. There will also be the occasional post in the Public Press area realted to the various incidents.
An important point to note is that when something happens, you may or may not know about it immediately. This adds to the challenge!
Although Stuff Happens can be applied to most other variants, it will not take full effect in games where there is no Messaging capability, such as Gunboat or PPO games.
