I feel really bad about the one missed moves. I picked up a abandoned position with 2 day deadlines, but apparently nearly all of that time had already been used and the deadline passed as I was just starting to send messages to other players. I thought it was a site bug. I did not know that picking up a position did not restart the clock. If you have minutes to make your moves on an abandoned position you really just have to move blind without any correspondence.
Sometimes you are really enjoying a game and sometimes you are making the best moves possible so that the person who is heading for a solo has the satisfaction of winning the game and not just having all the other players quit. Sometimes you are finishing the game for the other players enjoyment. And if you are an average player you will be soloing just one out of seven games.
My favorite games to pick up on ratings shields are when there is a chance of rallying the board and stopping a solo. I get zero points, but great satisfaction. For example in game [156676. Classic 12h/turn] I joined as England and forced a 3-way draw. I received 63% of -9 for draw with FRANCE and TURKEY (The site thinks I am better than a 3-way draw) and so I received zero point since I was on a ratings shield. Or game [155058. El Standardo] where I received 75% of 0 for draw with ITALY and GERMANY. Or game [149019. Happy Happy Joy joy] where I received 7% of 17 for draw with FRANCE and TURKEY and therefore gained a single point.
