Classicist Application

Hello -

I would like to apply for a classicist membership.

I've played 19 games without surrendering and have an NMR rate of less than 3%

For your consideration.

Thank You.

I don't mean to be rude and I don't have any authority for applications but ... wow! I haven't ever seen a less worthy candidate for Classicists. You surrendered in over 44% of your ranked games. You surrendered at least 8 times in October alone. You surrendered just last week in a protected game. In a game in August / September there was this gem in the public press:

Admin (Fall 1904, Aug 31 2015 00:46 (GMT))
gunboat433 joined the game as ITALY

ITALY (Fall 1904, Aug 31 2015 00:48 (GMT))
Greetings All. Drama abounds in this game (or so it would appear!)...

GERMANY (Fall 1904, Aug 31 2015 01:40 (GMT))
Yes there is some drama but I think it was the former italy

ITALY (Spring 1905, Sep 02 2015 01:34 (GMT))
Sorry guys got bored. Bye.

Admin (Spring 1905, Sep 02 2015 01:34 (GMT))
gunboat433 surrendered as ITALY.

GERMANY (Spring 1905, Sep 02 2015 12:58 (GMT))
I have never seen that before.

Why would you even want to be a Classicist? Do you realise that the whole point of Classicists is to provide a opportunity for those players who want to play a good game without NMR's and surrenders to find like-minded people who will play the same way? Why would you join that? Protected games are set up for some of the same reasons yet you NMR'd and surrendered just the same. Why would people believe that you would change as a Classicist?

'Sorry guys got bored.' Best reason I have seen for leaving a game. Refreshingly honest, though I equally loved Germany's response.

I'm with GoB on this one, gunboat433, I think that perhaps you tried to join the wrong group. Though I do like how you upsold your stats. Did you select the next guy in the players ratings to get your data? You may have just noticed the GoB is our resident statistician. However, my friend if you've turned over a new leaf in 2016 and are a reformed surrender addict, fair play to you and much respect.

I was in the protected game where this player recently surrendered -- Game ## 110030 ("Totalperfidy"). Before the Spring1905 turn, he complained in the Press that "this game is slow and boring...."

Now, the game did have some longish deadlines because it didn't process on weekends. And there was a delay just before that complaint due to an NMR. But quitting a game and failing to submit moves just ruins the game for everyone else -- we were all also frustrated and bored when long deadlines were extended because of NMRs, including the two NMRs by this player. But the game was very active at that point, with lots of changes to come, and it's not as if this player was doing anything to try and shake things up, at least as far as I could tell from the minimal communication I saw.

The Classicist criteria do say that, for Bronze, you only need to have no surrenders in your most recent 5 games. Perhaps this player meets those criteria, though I'm not sure that he does. But to my mind, this suggests that we should add another criteria, so that we don't have people qualify for "classicist" merely because they have a lot of games going at once, and manage not to surrender in a few of them. For example, we could add to Bronze "No surrenders in past 2 months", and increase that to 4 months for Silver, etc.

The whole point of the classicists is to have people who will stick it out no matter what -- even if they are losing, even if they think the game is boring -- out of respect for the game and for the other players. A player who sticks it out has a chance to make the game more interesting, for himself or herself and for the other players. When I join a classicist game, I want to know that I'm getting into a game with a group of dedicated players who all feel this way.

Gunboat, I am not trying to be insulting or inflammatory, and I apologize if this comes off that way. I encourage you to keep playing and to stick it out in games -- and not to quit just because you aren't fully entertained or engaged.

I have finished six games and wish to join the classicists. My consistency rate is at 100.00% and I have had no surrenders in the last six games.

So please accept my application to become a bronze classicist.

I aim to please!

But seriously gunboat - I don't mean to pick on you and I'd like to hear your side of things. Are you just not aware of what being a Classicist is supposed to mean or are you saying that as of now you aspire to play to that code? Or was it an intentionally ironic application and you were just having a laugh?

I would like to apply to become a Classicist. I have played 8 games with no NMR's and no surrenders. If I am accepted I would wonder if you could explain how I would set up games for Classicists only so that I do not have to deal with players who NMR or surrender. Is there a special page that I can post game info on to attract other Classicist or that I could see games being offered to Classicists.
Kindest Regards,

I'm sure you'll be accepted very soon - your stats are impeccable!

As for how to set up or join Classicist games you use the forum http://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=221 Just post your game and ask people to PM you for the password. Classicists is the most active of the member groups so it doesn't take too long.
