When I was mulling over the idea for the Diplomacy Clubs, one of the ideas I had that might grow from this is a team tournament. There have been a number of these before, some more successful than others. In the past, teams have been ad hoc things, formed by members of the community for the tournament and with no other reason. What I am thinking of for this is a team tournament, based around the structure of a convention tournament, with the Dip Clubs entering teams.
At the moment, there are only 3 Dip Clubs, of course, so to do this now would mean finding teams from elsewhere. I was considering inviting teams from the Classicists, Oldies, Students and possibly some of the other informal Forum groups - such as Mafia, CYOC, etc. I would need seven teams, so maybe it would do no harm for a first run to have ad hoc teams.
The format would be along the lines of a convention tournament, as I said. However, unlike a con tourney, I wouldn't be looking to have an individual aspect to this tournament (this time, at least). There would be four rounds of games, each game a standard game. Each team would enter three players into the round, and these three players would not meet each other in games. The fourth round would be different. In many conventions, the fourth round is where the games are structured into ranked tables - the top seven players being on the top table.
Each team could have up to six players. This would mean that the same three players would not necessarily play every game. Team Captains would nominate the three players and I would place them in their games.
I don't want to go into many more details right now, as that can wait until there is enough interest to take this forward. However, one thing I will make clear, as this is very different from the normal way I run tournaments: The games will NOT be anonymous. This means that players in a game will know which power is being played by which team (providing they do the research, of course). Why? As I said, this is going to be as close to a con tourney as possible and in a con tourney anonymity isn't available.
Scoring: individual players will score for their team in each game. Individual scores will be kept, but along the lines of which team spot players played in (eg if there was a Mods team, there would be three spots Mod1, Mod2 & Mod3; if the player who entered as Mod1 was replaced in Round 2, the score of the player in Round 2 would be added to Mod1). For the fourth round, the seven highest scoring team spots, regardless of which team they belonged to, would be placed on the top table, which might mean that a team might have more than one spot in games. Again, this is like a con tourney. This may seem unfair but that would have been earned in the first three games.
Eventually, the scores for each game will be added together for each team and the team with the highest combined score will win.
Anyway, that's the early thoughts. I will send info to different groups and clubs over the next couple of days. Oh, I should point out that, if you could represent more than one team, you will only be able to represent one.
