New Variant Needs Playtesters 7/7

Postby nanooktheeskimo » 18 Jul 2015, 21:12

GM Rules and a map without starting units are here: viewtopic.php?f=444&t=49984

Important note: this is a 4 year test run, not a full game yet.

The name of the game is Mind Your Minor. Myself and ferdy0 are the evil geniuses humble inventors of this Diplomacy Variant, which we would like your help to give a test drive.

The game is played on a Versailles map with standard diplomacy rules except where noted:

Players control one of the Minor Powers only instead of a Major Power.

Phases: There will be an extra phase added before each orders phase and after any adjustments--so for example, year one will work as such: February 1929 Bidding (see Controlling Majors below for more information on the bidding phase); Spring 1929 Orders; Spring 1929 Retreats; August 1929 Bidding; Fall 1929 Orders; Fall 1929 Retreats; Winter 1929 Builds/destroys.

Diplomacy Points (DPs): Used in the Bidding Phase, to gain added control over a Major Powers orders (see Controlling Majors for more information). The amount of DPs available is 4 each Bidding Phase, until eliminated. DPs must be bid in whole numbers.

Influence Points (IPs): Used during the Orders Phase, to influence a Major Powers orders (see Controlling Majors for more information). The amount of IP available is equal to the amount of SC controlled, with a cap at 3. IP must be allocated in whole numbers.

Controlling Majors: During the course of the game, the Minor Powers will have the chance to influence the orders of the Major Powers. Orders are determined in the following manner: during the Bidding Phases (February and August), players may bid up to 4 DPs on a Major Power—winning a bid will mean orders issued for that country during the Orders Phase will count as 1.5 strength (first time only—ie, two IP allocated count as 2.5, not 3). Bids will be kept anonymous, with only the resulting added control revealed (ie, players will know that Spain has added influence over France, but not whether he received support in his bid or how much he bid to begin with). Countries may use their DPs to add to another countries bid.

In the Orders Phases, countries may use their IPs to enter orders for Majors Powers units. They may allocate as many IP as they possess towards one order, or divide them over multiple orders. During adjudication, the orders for each unit with the most IP behind it will be processed and any others discarded. This is where DPs come in handy, as they essentially give an extra half-IP for the selected country. For example: Spain has won the bid on France during the Bidding Phase. In the Orders phase, he allocates one IP to the order Bre move to ENG. Sweden allocates one IP to the order Bre move to MAO. Because Spain won the bid for France, his order is considered to have a strength of 1.5 IP during adjudication, and would therefore override Sweden’s order. Any order he writes for a French unit while having won the bid for them is considered to have a base 1.5 bid strength. If two orders of equal influence are entered, they are canceled out and result in a hold. Two countries may enter the same order for a unit, effectively pooling their IPs.

With both DPs and IPs, all bids and allocation will be anonymous with only the results published.

Miscellaneous:
Major Powers may not support a unit not belonging to them into their own SC.

This is a build anywhere variant—meaning that Minor Powers will be able to build in any unoccupied SC they control after a Fall orders phase.

Major Powers in theory can acquire additional SCs to their starting ones, but they will forgo builds.

Greece starts with a fleet instead of an Army

Starting positions:
Spain: F Mad
Egypt: F Cai
Greece: F Ath
Rumania: A Buc
Yugoslavia: A Beo
Czechoslovakia: A Pra
Sweden: F Sto

Don't discuss country preferences beforehand, as it will be a blind auction to determine country allocation.

Ferdy0 will be acting as second eyes for all things involving DPs and IPs, so please remember to copy him on messages. Any questions involving gameplay or mechanics should also be sent to us both and labeled differently than orders, given that we have equal custody ;)

I'll also provide a map without the units so the abbreviations are clear.
