Rounds 3 and 4 start poll - PLEASE READ THE POST BELOW FIRST

Postby rick.leeds » 25 Jun 2013, 14:50

As mentioned in the PM I sent you, this poll is about whether we start rounds 3 and 4 as soon as possible or delay until September.

There are a number of people who have PMed me to say that they will either have to drop out from the tournament or would need a delay in game starts, mainly because of the holiday season (the summer). To be honest, I didn't consider that. So we can either postpone the start of Rounds 3 and 4 until September or we can continue straight away and have people use the request procedure to delay a game start or extend a deadline.

There are pros and cons for both. On the face of it, delaying the start of Rounds 3 and 4 will deal with most of the problems (assuming those that have said they will need to leave the tournament are doing so only because the holidays or other issues are really to do with starting as soon as possible). However, it may also mean that some people would no longer be active on site by September and I may need to find replacements anyway... and, again, it is possible that finding replacements might be easier in September.

If we start this coming weekend, as I planned to do, then players can PM me to request a delay in the start of their games. This is manageable from an organisational point of view, although if I then find that another player in the game needs to delay the start of a game which has already been delayed that is going to become more complicated. Players can also request a postponement of deadlines within a game ... and they can, of course, try to find a substitute.

You can vote for only one. The poll will last for 7 days. You can change your vote.

When players sign up for a tournament they know what they're signing up for. I don't know if there's much else to say about this.

When I signed up for the tournament...I had plenty of time...

And we had another MASSIVE delay due to Rick's unforseen absence.

Had the games already been started, I would have let a sub work on it for me....but Im gone for the next 3 weeks and won't be able to START the game...that was my only issue.

THIS is, of course, one of the problems. The Tournament was pushed back and - given that the games have moved on pretty quickly themselves - this is the reason we are playing rounds 3 and 4 in July/August.

I'd heavily lean towards no. The longer these tournaments take the more likely original participants will start to drop off. It's very hard to keep a collective audience of this size engaged and adding delays into the mix is only going to make things harder. It's like having a baby, if you're waiting for the perfect time then it's just never going to happen. Best just to push forward and deal with the bumps in the road as they come.

Yeah, I can't imagine a delay until September is going to solve the problem. I would suspect that just as many people that a September delay would help, there would be a group of people that become disinterested and leave as well.

If it is just a matter of finding replacements, I would think a little advertising similar to what sinnybee did when he blew up PDGC would help solve that issue.

What I mean by that, asudevil, is that Rick is back now and the tournament is about to start. If one cannot commit the time to play now, then obviously they cannot play. However, if they remain on the roster, well, they still ought to know what they're signing up for (or in this case, re-signing up for), right?

Hence why as soon as I got Rick's email...I replied saying I am going out of town and will need a replacement.
