Α.Ι.

Postby Belisarius » 26 Sep 2016, 17:07

Hello All,
I don't know if this has been discussed, I couldn't see anything in the recent posts.

Given the stellar development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) do you think we could ever see a computer play Diplomacy?

We know they can beat us at Chess and Go. How about Diplomacy...?

Short answer, eventually AI will be able to play Diplomacy. But, it still has a long way to go.

The difference between Go, Chess, and Diplomacy is that the first two games are 2-player perfect knowledge games that only require tactical and strategic considerations. With Diplomacy, strategy and tactics are not sufficient. The AI will need to be able to persuade, lie, detect veracity, work with others, and (of course) stab. This additional range of capability will take some time. At the rate of development, I think between 2040 and 2050 we might have a solid AI player.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

Of course, when that happens, we are dead...

I actually have a copy of the Diplomacy game CD, where the computer plays the other countries.

But VERY badly

I still have a copy of that too (Paradox). You win almost every game.

I think we will need to wait for an AI to pass the Turing test (or close to passing) in order to negotiate properly. 2040 sounds about right.

Anyway, why the need, when we have this site?

To be honest, I am an A.I. program developed by grad students at M.I.T.

I think with the accelerating rate of technological advances, it will be much sooner that 2040.

The future as we imagine it is much closer than we think. I realized that recently with a very simple example. I have two kids, 5 and 7. They may never need a drivers license...

And their self-driving cars will be flying cars. ;)

As a general statement, the only prediction one can accurately make about the distant (25+ years) future is that any other predictions will be inaccurate.

After I put down that date range, I was tempted to reconsider and make it sooner for that same reason (acceleration). Also, there are some components already sort of working.

However, the integration of these different skills and the dynamics required to play Diplomacy is beyond straight AI and into creating artificial personalities. This I think is a next level breakthrough that may counter the acceleration aspect.

Is there an AI that plays a decent Gunboat game?
