Writing Contest Mafia AAR (Scum Win)

Postby AKFD » 18 Jan 2021, 15:25

Oh wow. That was one wild ride.

Being a first time GM was way harder than expected, as I had to deal with a lot of external and personal issues that hampered my ability to GM. I tried my best though, and it worked. I did make a lot of mistakes on the way, and I felt disorganized. And I probably should design the game better.

But it was a real learning experience, and hats off to anyone who's GMed before because it's really hard. Playing Mafia is one thing, but GMing is a whole new level.

Anyways, 2 mistakes I made:
1. On the first TK, I killed Dwiltse. But I was supposed to push that through a tiebreaker. Because Dwilts and BS didn't submit prompts to the first prompt, which had the vote. So it was supposed to be 4 on Jako and 4 on Dwilts, but I feel like it wouldn't impact the game much because they were both town.
2. The Subotai modkill and allowing town to do that is a much bigger issue. I decided to allow the modkill because at first I thought it was fair play. After consulting other GMs and fellow players in the spec chat, I am making the decision to not allow this type of play in my future games. Because I was too late to realize it and my rules didn't have anything against it though, my decision stands. Though I will rectify this in the future.

On the game, that was a clean one by sjg and Justin. Props off to Justin specifically, because this is his first scum game, and he was universally townread. Amazing.
Feel free to discuss about the game here.

I will provide links to the specthread and the scumchat when both members consent.

Congrats guys. I'm not even mad. I had actually been thinking it would be poetic justice if scum outplayed us after Shadow did some of the craziest angleshooting I've ever personally observed in a game.

Very well played by the scumteam! Thoroughly beautiful trickery and we were simply outplayed.

I got it right at the end!!! Was a lot easier if you knew I was town!

But wow, good job SJG and Justin (especially)! This was a fun return to mafia, even if we got soundly destroyed...

SJG/Justin, I assume you intentionally kept me as a suspect without hard pushing it (so I'd be an easy late kill). When did you decide to do this? I only twigged fully after ISOing SJG on the final day...

And I assume you killed Nimb because he was the only on vaguely suspecting Justin? Or was he just the towniest town left?

So what would have been my prize if we had gone to D4?

Here was my final winning answer:

Dear AKFD,

Watching you grow from a hesitant kiddo stumbling over your own words into an insightful townie, a brave and eager scumster, and now a capable GM, has been an absolute delight for me. I've considered myself a mentor to you at least a couple times, and seeing you continue to grow just makes me so proud. Thank you for running this game, even if playing it has occasionally made me want to rip my hair out.

I actually didn't randomize it.

I just did. It was another extra vote.

100% agreed. Can we policyKill him at the start of the next game? ;)

Plugging in 2 Mafia games in signups:

Telleo's A Return to Numbers
sjg's Multi-colored Vote

And I need all the criticism I can get, as I am designing a new Mafia game based on my favorite video game series, Just Dance. I'm not yet sure when to run this, but definitely not in the next few months.
