Don't lie, ever. Period.

Mislead? yes. Be noncommittal? Yes. Lie? Just don't do it.

Wait a second... Define Mislead there Ifni, because I can cut and paste some messages in old games that I would construe as lying on your part. Or... was that post a lie?

Misleading can be to suggest something, but not agree to it. Or to suggest a move that someone else does... that is in your favor (though you don't argue for it that way).

Also Dip, I never lied to you, and we've been over this.

Lie, mislead. You say potato and all that.

I think that it is necessary to never be seen as predictable. I have mislead. I have likely lied. I do not enjoy it and would prefer to make my alliance and stick with it come hell or high water, but that is bad for business. At the very least I misled Uncle Monty in one game. I felt very bad, but I felt that I was becoming predictable in my alliance settings.

Predictability is bad. Lying is bad. Ipso facto, Diplomacy is BAD.

But it feels soooooo good!

Thanks Dip. I think you are bad too. But bad in the way those crazy kids use the term today. "Dude, he is bad!" Or is that how they used the term yesterday? I can't keep up and now I'm rambling, showing yet another indication of my age. That and I announced it in another thread.

Look! A birdie!

Not a golf birdie...

Personally, I like the opportunity to turn on someone without deception. It makes things easier on my conscience, (still sadly influential on my actions), and doesn't burn many bridges. Thus agreements like "non-aggression until S-05" or "cooperation until Austria is eliminated or reduced to one SC" can, on occasion, be very useful. Many players will forget about the terms, allowing you to position yourself for an attack in the final year of the truce, then devastate them in a completely justifiable manner. Best of all, the honesty of waiting has led people I did attack to apologize for not discussing re-upping the deal earlier and renewing the truce...minus the three centers I just grabbed off them.
