Most useless territories

Postby Crisu » 05 Dec 2008, 17:46

I suppose Clyde has been the butt of a lot of jokes around here ... or do people in the global Diplomacy community make fun of it?

But they are the territories on the edges of the world, like Syria.

I've never been a fan of Albania either.

North Africa would appear useless because it doesn't connect with Spain, and people only want Tunis anyway, but it has its uses during a stalemate in the Mediterranean.

St. Petersburg is the exception to the 'useless corner' concept, since it's a valuable supply center.

Should Helgoland Bight have been a little bit bigger, perhaps encompassing all of Holland's coast?

Bulgaria's east and south coast also annoy me greatly; I'd rather it be like Sweden. ...but now I'm getting off-topic.

Wow I never thought about it. Why does sweden not have east and west coast, like bulgaria?

thats why denmark is not solid on its eastern side. The gaps for water show a fleet can move through.

But a fleet can't go directly from SKA to BAL; it still has to stop in DEN, much like how BLA must stop in CON before going to AEG.

However a fleet can go from SKA to SWE and then SWE to BAL.

In Turkey this isn't possible. You cannot do BLA to BUL and then BUL to AEG.

All territories have uses depending on the situation. Albania is huge if you are F or I and trying to get T out of the Ionian, and the reverse is true. Also Albania is key if you are breaking the Austrian's down as France where they hold Tri/Tyr since it can also attack Tri and you can plan an army there. Syria is key for breaking down Turkey if you are Russia or Italy. North Africa clearly holds value in taking WMed or MAO. They all have something, not just clyde.

Yes Swe is an odd one with its coast line that runs from Fin to Nor and all areas in between. Still thats the map and the way its been for 50+ years I think, so we go with it.

Sweden is a different case than Bul et al. The waterway is not through Denmark, it is right along the Den-Swe border. In Con, for example, part of it borders Bulgaria, and the waterway is right through the middle of Con, hence a fleet in Bulgaria has to go through Con to get around to the other side. With Denmark and Sweden, the passageway is not through the middle of either one, but along the border of the two, so a fleet only has to go through one to get to the other side.

AND Sweden has really good looking swimsuit models too, at least from what I've seen. Very different than girls who wear wooden shoes.... or is that Holland? ;)

I've found myself in Clyde and Albania just about every game lately.

Well, I mean Clyde OR Albania. Hard to do without having solo'd three turns back...

In fact, I think I visit Clyde more often than I do Wales or even Yorkshire...

Syria is rarely visited but I'll never say useless - a great way to invade Turkey from the East is a fleet into EasMed and a convoy to Syria.

Hey, there's no better way to judge a girl's fertility than by the shape and color of her wooden shoes!
