How'd you come up with this?
I've been interested in the idea of cumulative points causing someone to get closer to dying for a while. About a month ago, on the bus, I came up with the push/pull theme, and realized it made it that much more interesting if they interacted. Ran through a couple town plans in my head that would break the game, and put in rules that nerfed those plans. The most recent addition is the "Push causes you to go the other way" rule, which was put in because I wanted it to be realistic. I think it also opened up a lot of neat outcomes.
Long story short: the idea evolved from a central premise.
