New variant - Hundred - AVAILABLE NOW

Postby super_dipsy » 18 Mar 2018, 09:32

In this 10th birthday year, it seems appropriate to have a new variant, or perhaps more than one ;)

We will soon be releasing the Hundred variant (loosely based on the Hundred Years War) here at Playdip. This variant was created by Andy Schwarz and can be found in the Variant Bank here http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/h/hundred.htm. Our own Pladyip page about the game is in the variants section of the Information subforum here https://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=566&t=57439. The variant never would have happened without our own NoPunIn10did who not only produced the map but also did all the hard work of creating all the vector files etc.. In all, he probably did 90% of the work, leaving me simply to do the few bits and pieces to make it all work with our site.

So what is Hundred?
- It's a THREE PLAYER variant. Not a fake one like the 3-handed Diplomacy available on the standard map, but designed specifically to be 'proper' Diplomacy with 3 players
- It's set in Europe in 1425, involving England, France and Burgundy
- With only 17 SCs and a 9 SC victory target, games are likely to be fast (and possibly furious!)
- All games are build anywhere, so available variants are the base Build Anywhere version, Age of Empires and Chaos together with all the normal add-ons like Fog, Stuff etc
- Of course, as usual since this is a map variant it is only available to Premium players or non-premiums with a Premium Credit

In my opinion, Hundred should be pretty well suited to online play. I am particularly pleased to a see a game where lack of comms is likely to bring about a fairly swift demise :) . In 7 player games, we often hear people complaining that one country is simply not talking to them. You may be able to get away with that for a short while in a 7-player game, but in a 3 player game I imagine if you aren't actively talking to both the other players, you'll be lost before you can blink ;)

Anyway, here is the map. Note that this example shows the Hundred-specific unit selection provided by NoPun. Other standard Playdip icons are also available. Note also that the French unit in Provence is a 'mercenary' - Provence is not an SC but France has a special dispensation at the start of the game to have an extra unit.

As has become our habit recently, Hundred will start out as unranked until we are confident that it is all working properly. Once we re confident, the intention is to allow ranked games of Hundred, but some modeling is required first to ensure that the rapid nature and likely high solo percentage do not unbalance the rating system.

Finally, we realize that this variant did not follow the normal pattern we have used in the past of voting etc, but with NoPun offering all the hard work it seemed too good an opportunity to miss :D

Hm.. so it's Guyenne, not Guernica. Nice. :)

Just a question: are there fleets, or can the units just walk on sea spaces?

The 'special' icons as shown above are triangles for fleets and hexes for armies, but armies can certainly walk on water between London and Calais :)

Ah, triangles and hexagons, I can see it now. Great. Can't wait to play em.

Eh, it’s more like they use small craft to make the crossing. :-)

I've been using hexes and sails (the triangles with curved tops) for all the maps I've built for PBEM and PBF games. I know geometric units aren't everyone's cup of tea, but they're a nice canvas upon which other country-specific designs can be added quite easily.
