Doubles Tournament

Postby rick.leeds » 01 Oct 2009, 21:14

I've been playing with this idea for a while now and thought I'd float it and see what you lot think.

Doubles Tournament

1. Basic Idea
- This is a tournament with teams of two people (doubles, see? ;) ) playing in the same game.
- A single game will feature three pairs. The 7th country will be played by me.
- Countries will be assigned randomly, so one pair might be unlucky and get England and Austria, whilst another pair might get Russia and Turkey. There will therefore be some luck in the countries your doubles team draws, but I think over a number of games this should be evened out (any fixed pairings of countries are not equally weighted anyway).
- To balance this further, each player will not need to play the same country three times in the same round and each doubles team will not have the same pair of countries twice in the same round.
- Each doubles team would know which country the pair have but not who is playing the other countries. The pair could then discuss which country they were going to play before subscribing to the game.
- I would announce to all involved the country I would be in control of. This country would be in Civil Disorder, with me ordering HOLDS (so as not to allow an automatic surrender).
- Diplomacy would be as normal. The trick would be in NOT revealing too early who is your automatic ally, your partner.

2. The Games
- Games would be classic Diplomacy.
- Deadlines would be 48/24/24 with Finalise activated.
- They would be anonymous and No Rank (after all, in-game meta-gaming is a given).
- They would include preferences, with each player entering the name of his/her assigned country in each option box.

3. Scoring
- Players would be awarded points individually, as in normal Dip, but points would then be combined for the doubles team.
- Points would be awarded as per the site norm: TOURNAMENT POINTS (TP).
- If a game does not finish by the end of 1915 orders, 0 TPs will be awarded.
- Detour98f would be used to break ties. (For those who don't know I will explain Detour98f once we have enough interest.)
- Should a further tie-breaker be needed, aggregated SCs held in games played in a round will be used.
- Should a further tie-breaker be needed, number of first places (calculated using Detour98f system) will be used, then 2nd places, then 3rd, then 4th.

4. Structure
This depends on the number of pairs we get involved. We ideally need a multiple of 6 doubles teams, although multiple of 3 would also work. There will be at least an Elimination Round and a Final Round. The Final Round will be a multiple game play-off, and points from the Elimination Round will not be carried forward.

So there's the basic idea. Everything's up for discussion, although I - as Tournament Director (sorry, the power's gone to my head  ) - will have the final say. The plan at the moment is to canvass opinion, see if there's enough interest and move forward to deciding the structure of the Tournament if there is. Look forward to your comments!

Each game will be anonymous. You will only know the identity of your partner in the game.

I'll start a sign-ups thread but when you sign-up let me know both players in the team, please.

Kinda flexible about that at the moment. If we get a good amount of teams fairly quickly, as soon as possible. I'm thinking 15 or 18 teams...? Might be too many there (12, maybe) and I guess it can work with any number of teams - the more the merrier though ;)

If someone's thinking of getting premium before joining in the the blood-letting, there'll be time ;)
