Diplomat, can you switch the assignments for Round 2 and 3. I messed them a little. Oops. But everything is fine.

So... is round 3 really round 2, and vice versa?

Does anyone know the minimum score out of your 4 games to guarantee yourself a place on the final board?

I tried doing it using a spreadsheet and got as far as there being 625 possible score combinations. After that I got a little bit stuck (or lazy)...
7 out of 28 (i.e. 25%) players get to the top table. My assumption is you therefore need to be in the top 25% (or 157) score combinations to guarantee you a place.
If you list out all 625 score combinations and sort them by total score the top 25% of score combination lands in the middle of a band of 25's.

So to guarantee a place on the top board you need a *minimum* of 25 points according to my calculations, and there are 157 score combinations to achieve this!

There are also 50 ways to leave your lover according to Simon and Garfunkel.

There are obvious flaws in my logic (there always is). Only 4 individuals can score the maximum of 48 points, so there are some cases where even 25 is not enough. However 4 people on 48 points is not possible if someone has 25 points so hopefully there's no conflict in the logic.

This isn't the same question as how many points do you need to limp onto the top table! If all games ended in a 4-way draw then clearly you don't need 25 points, only 12 and a very stressed out Samarkand. I was just trying to work out the minimum score to guarantee you a place.

Is there a simple formula? I suspect I've over complicated it. Bit like my life really.

I've been thinking about the same, but without putting too much effort into it. One of the apparant flaws in your schema, seems to be the fact that almost everybody plays against everybody, which should rule out more than one perfect score of 48 and a lot of lower combinations too.

To be honest I can't be arsed to do this in a scientific way, so I'm just following my gut feeling, which is putting the cut at 20 points with a 3-4 points variation in both directions. I doubt that 4 3-way wins will be enough, but it's gonna be close. I'm guessing 1 solo, 1 2-way and a 3-way/4-way draw to make the final table, without having to rely on tie-breakers.

Look at it this way.

There are 12 points for each game of the tournament. 4 rounds. 4 games per round. That is 16 games.

12 * 16 = 192 points total.

lets say that there are only 8 people who get ANY points and they all get equal. 192/8 = 24 points.

That means that 24 points will almost assuredly get you to the final table. As long as one of the 8 people scoring only gets 23.

I am guessing it will be around 18 points that will get you to the final table.

After the first round games are complete it will be interesting to see the standings.

I also think that 16-20 will do it for you. I expect there will be a handful that have 3-4 points, and a few that have 1 solo or a pair of 2 way draws. It you can manage to get into 4 3 way draws I actually expect you will make it in but it will be interesting to see what happens. The first 2 games are almost about making sure you get something, not risking it all to get nothing, setting yourself up to see what you might need to get in the final 2 games to make sure you arrive in the finale. Of course, if you can solo games 1 and 2 clearly you can take the rest of the tournament off til that final table. Whoever you are I envy you, that is certainly not me ;)
