PPO tournament

Postby jimbobicus » 26 Feb 2010, 12:44

The idea here is to set up a public press only tournament. PPO seems a very marginalised variant here, with only very few games of this format taking place. This is a great shame, because in my games, I have found it a very skillful and interesting variant. For those not familiar with it, PPO means that only communication in the shoutbox is allowed. So if you try to create a peace agreement or alliance with another player, everyone else will also see this. All messages you post can be seen by your enemies as well as your friends, and so it really challenges the way you approach the game. I would like to create some games for those interested in playing this, and to put it into the form of a tournament.

Here's my rough plan:
Plan A: we get 14 players - so 7 teams of 2. There are 2 rounds with 2 games in each round. In each round, we have a regular PPO and a variant PPO game. For one of the rounds, I suggest Fog of War, which I know works very well in combination with PPO. For the other variant, I'm open to suggestions. Maybe Chaos?

Plan B: we get 7 players, so have an individual tournament. Each player plays 2 games: one regular game and one with fog of war.

The deadlines I recommend are 48/24/24 hours, but this is flexible. Anyway guys, time to get some feedback. What do you all think?

It seems at the very least a reasonable way to get a list of 14 people who will actually be willing to get a PPO game going once in a while.

Sign me up.

Sign me up too, and I think we can get to more than 14 players so the tournament will be bigger.

Thanks for the support guys, but we need some more players if this is to get off the ground.

Yes you certainly can.

That means we are now up to 5. We need 2 more for the Plan B tournament or 9 more for the Plan A. I'm thinking we are probably better off going for Plan B unless we get a sudden surge in interest. Are you all happy with my proposed format?

I'm happy with that format, and I think it'd be better to get a game going with 7 rather than wait for 14.
