It’s a friends game however, so I doubt any rules regarding outside advice are applicable.

Why is that cheating? It certainly isn't 'rulebook cheating'.
Play every game of Diplomacy as if it will be the last game of Diplomacy you will ever play.

Sorry to resurrect this dormant thread, but just to clarify, or course the rulebook does not forbit this. However in an online world where people cannot see other players, long ago people raised a concern of playing against 'teams', particularly where the team might be a loly ranked / beginner player and a strong player. In the current scoring system, people would suffer more from this because of the rating disparity.
So the site rules say that this is something you should not do.
