[Potential] Game Expires after First Turn NMR Reset

Postby Martz » 13 Jan 2020, 12:59

Hello!

After waiting a long time to get enough players to sign up, a Milan variant game started called "First Time in Milan".

Before seeing the results of the spring orders, the game vanished yesterday. A small chance it was a bug, but possibly the game was removed because of cheaters found in it? Haven't seen anything about it in the cheaters subforum. I just wonder what happened to it and it's a shame because it took so long to find enough people wanting to play the variant.

Hi Martz,

Did someone NMR and hence got auto-surrendered? If so the game might be back in your pending games waiting for a new player.

It catches a lot of players out when that happens :)

It's not in my pending games, no trace of it on the site.

I honestly didn't dream that a Milan game was finally found! :)

I cannot find any record of this game in the database. My suspicion is that (1) the game was First-Turn Protected, meaning that the whole game reset after an NMR in the first turn. Also, it (2) was nearing the end of its lifespan. Games that don't fill up are automatically deleted after a period of time (about a month, if I remember right). What may have happened is that the game was probably created in early December but expired as soon as it was reset.

I can't say with certainty whether this actually happened, but it's my strong suspicion. If so, this is a potential bug, as a game that resets due to first-turn NMR should also have the timer reset for expiration.

Thank you.
I can't remember if the game was NMR protected or not, I did create the game somewhere around a month ago however.

If there were 6 active players placing orders in the first Spring, it doesn't seem right that the game should vanish through one player having an NMR.

That's a fair assessment. Because the game was very likely first-turn-NMR-protected, as no other game type resets, it is supposed to drop back to the open game listings. Likewise, if a game sits in open listings for too long, it is supposed to clean up. However, these two things combined are clearly not a helpful scenario.
